Cheapest way to replace locks on a VW Polo

Options
After some advice if anyone can offer any....

I have a 'V' plate VW Polo with central locking. Over the last couple of days both the driver and passenger locks have deteriorated in that they will both only turn in one direction.

I have to open the central locking using the passenger door and lock it with the drivers door...this is the only way to open and close the car currently.

The rear doors and boot are still operational.

I am worried that the locks will fail completely and i will be left locked out of my car miles from home :(.

Have phoned the local VW dealer who have quoted £220 labour to strip down the door(s) plus £250 per door lock

Can anyone offer some advice on a cheaper alternative to dealer prices..ie mobile locksmith?? etc or whether it does infact sound like the locks have gone given that they both gave up within a day of each other.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated....

Give them a good squirt of lubricant - perhaps start by spraying WD40 in, work the lock, and then use a proper spray lubricant. You may find they start working again.

Unlikely both locks would have the same fault, passenger door lock rarely gets used. If you have another key try that. GSF are cheap for vw parts.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I do have another key so will give that a try also. Many thanks for the suggestion.

That's fine, but changing locks on many cars can be a massive pain - fiddly and awkward with little access.

You will almost certainly need an excentric kit. The 'paddle' that actuates the locking on the back of the barrell (or a part of that mechanism) is quite reknown for breaking up after a few years, and seeing as though the car is now 12years old I'd guess that's the issue. Both can go at the same time, or even the passenger one went 1st, but because you mainly use the drivers door, you didn't know about it until you needed to use it more!

A new lock, a gallon of lube or WD40 will not help you i'm afriad. But about £5-10 will sort the problem per door.

    Not with you on this.
Are you saying the op should be paying £10 to £20 to have the job done, not the £720 VW have quoted, as that's a lot of difference.
