mobileshop - "Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas Email £360"

Anyone else get this "offer" from mobileshop?

I am on a 12-month free deal (£360 cashback) but just received this in my email...

"Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas, how would you like Santa to bring you a wad of cash? No milk, carrots or mince pies required!
We have left you a message but we have not had a return call so we thought we would email you so that you do not miss out on this snowball of an offer.
Save yourself the hassle of finding the correct bills and popping down to the post office each time to send us your vouchers in months 5, 7, 9 and 12.
Instead you can have an easy life by simply e-mailing us back @ cash@mobileshop.co.uk and we will send you a cheque for £220 the same day voiding all your cash back vouchers that you received with your order.
Have a Christmas to remember on Mobileshop.com
Season’s Greetings from Mobileshop.com Claims Department.
Offer open until 30th November 2006 "

£220 now or £360 over the course of a year. hmmm....looks like they are trying to reduce their liabilities and/or reduce the hassle of claims at their end.

Any thoughts?

  • Not had it yet but I know even with it being free, it was too expensive.

    I wouldn't use them again.

Is that because of something that they have done or just the cashback system in general?

I would not go to these monkeys either.
They have never paid me on time they always make excuses
there Bacs system is down or it 14 days days for basc payment to hit your account.
the deal was I would get all my cost back not part.
Anyway this is what I would do take the offer ring the network up and downgrade your contract to the lowest possible cost.
see than u may just break even.

    regards

HAve 3 contracts with them and so far 6 sets of payments gone through without aggro, the next three have been confirmed as received immediately and payment not yet due. Compared to others that I have used (OSPS) they are fantastic.

There is considerable speculation floating about that they're in financial difficulties; offers like this don't help their cause unfortunately.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.

Possibly. Have just looked at their website and they don't have any decent 12 month free offers any more - perhaps they are now managing themselves out of the market.
  • I received an offer like this a year or two ago when I had a cashback - if it was to do with financial difficulties then would they still be around now?

I think they are being clever. They'll monitor people and possibly only send this to people who they know usually send the bills in on time. And with Xmas coming up, they can make a fast buck with people desperate for money.

    It's all clever I'm telling you :T

The phone arrived but couldn't be charged up. I sent it back and a month later it was returned. No battery.

Two weeks later a new battery arrived but not the one for my phone.

Two week s later, I had an email to say the correct charger would be sent (it was the battery that I needed). A week later and the correct battery arrived. Still wouldn't charge up.

Sent the phone back again and they sent me a new one which (touch wood) works fine. I reached the first cash back date (month 5) before using the contract (£35 per month). Despite their best efforts to make claiming cash back difficult, they have confirmed that they have received my claim and that I should wait 60 days for payment.

Then they send an email asking if I want a DVD player instead of the cash back.

I value my time much more than a mobile phone and all this hassle isn't worth it.

I noticed this too. First time in years that Mobileshop doesn't have any really good cashbacks.

    Who do people recommend now?

Mobileshop cashback offers change within days, so if you are looking, do go back. Each month they seem to have periods when there are no 12 month free offers, so this is not new or unusual. I get the impression that the offers come on depending on where they are in the monthly cycle and no doubt what their targets are with the networks. The best offers seem to be with o2 - they went away for a while but keep popping up again.

I had a few problems with cashback in September as it was delayed due to technical problems (or some such excuse) - now my cashbacks have been changed from 45 days to 60 days after the date of the voucher. But, all being well, the cashbacks are still being processed. That said, I am never clear how, based on free phone, free connnection, and 12 months free line rental, they can make any money if people manage to claim all cashbacks due (as I feel sure that the networks don't offer them that much in commission).

I didn't receive the message you referred to, but did get one offering me a DVD player instead of my cashback (and their text also directs you to their website where you can choose other "gifts"/exchanges dependng on the value of your cashback. I am not sure how many people would take them up on this - a portable DVD player (currently £60 approx in Aldi) or £105 cashback ... decisions decisions ...
