Coco when you asked to apply for the Basic Bank account they might of automatically applied you for the BBA 'Barclays Bank Account' which is their basic current account and is therefore credit scored. Did you specifically ask for the cash card account? It seems 95% of people say the cash card account isn't credit scored - just ID Checked.

I recently applied for a basic bank account with barclays to use as I have just become bankrupt , I was advised they are bankrupt friendly so I went and applied in branch was there about an hour and after all that I was declined due to credit scoring ? The lady in the bank says they are getting quite strict now on there basic bank account and that there was nothing else they could do for me.

Try the Co-op Bank. Ask for the Cashminder account. Barclays and Co-op are the only bankrupt friendly bank.

You could go and try Barclays again, but ask for the Cash Card Account.

Really coco, I am not a Bankrupt though so hopefully it may make a difference - anyone? before i go to barclays and make myself look stupid!

If you have no credit problems in the pass, you will have no problem getting the Cash Card Account.

I wish you all the best. Tell us how you get on.

    Hi there.

Went to my local Barclays branch yesterday but there was nobody available to discuss opening an account at all THIS WEEK. So I have had to make an appointment for next Tuesday. With there being a Post Office at the end of my street when I got back I rang the co-op and applied for the Cashminder current account over the phone but it got referred to the underwriters, which means I will probably get rejected as I normally do when it goes to underwriters.

I have been on the electoral roll at my current address since the middle of last year or so and so has my partner (I rang my local council to check this). Yet I am still having to prove my ID on any applications. Why is this!? I have a mobile phone contract (x2) and all my virgin cable services at this address too which are reported to credit reference agencies so they must have sufficient information to see that I am who I am and that I live there?

    I fear another rejection.

EDIT: Book12 - I said in my original post (apologies if I didn't), that my past credit history is causing me the problems. I have no CCJ's, Bankruptcy or IVA's. But I do have some old defaults from 2/3 years back.

Getting referred to the underwriters doesn't mean a decline. Some people on this forum were in your situation, and was successful in having the Co-op Cashminder account.

Even though you are on the electoral roll, proving physical ID/address is still needed. It's the FSA rules.

I suppose I just lack that confidence with banks now due to rejections. I am half tempted to just keep what I've got all be it a pain and just get my credit score up to the point where I can apply for a proper current account, these basic bank accounts are getting on my nerves if I am totally honest lol.

I've just switched from a FULL current account at Santander (was a Premier account but just a bog standard one now) to a Cash Card Account at Barclays and tbh, I much prefer it. The Debit card that comes with it is very good (used it loads!) although interestingly its no longer Connect branded - mine just says Barclays with the Visa Debit logo in the bottom corner. Have set up all my DD's on it and switched my wage payment over. It works exactly the same as my A&L one did (different AID number which is interesting - had loads of arguments about A&L one as it would read Electron in some places with Electron AID but Barclays one has an 'offline' AID and just reads Visa Debit so better in a way - I really didnt want one of the nasty unembossed Santander cards!!!)
I've also got a Halifax Easycash and Co-Op Cashminder (mine was also referred but came back fine) credit rating is shot to pieces due to DMP anyway..

Mrs Ryan, thanks a lot for your info regarding this.
I think I should go in for my appointment next Tuesday at Barclays then. I take it you would highly recommend the Barclays cash card account? Which of the co-op and barclays would you recommend? I have a Post Office on the end of my street, so either is really handy for me to deposit and withdraw without having to go into town.

Good with Barclays that the card is a visa debit and shows as Visa debit. Have read into the card situation with Barclays and I was told by a lady on the phone that the card is a visa debit with 'electron' technology so I just assumed it was Visa Electron.

  • Hi Folks,

Going to call Barclays today to set up an appointment for a basic account.

I have Barclays credit card which has the interest frozen until my DMP is set up (Barclays have by far had the best customer service I have come across )

Will I still be accepted ?

    Thanks in advance
    Big W
  • Just to let everyone know, Although I know this post is quite old. I wanted to let everyone know that Basic ank Accounts are credit scored just like everyday accounts. The only difference is that the basic accounts have a lower pass score, making it easier to pass.

Electoral Roll and accounts at your current address does not mean you willl not have to provide Identifiction.

Also if you have a record of fraud, it is very unlikely you will be accepted. Even if you are they will probably send you a letter to say your account is closed a week later....

Basic account debit cards branded 'Visa Debit' are indeed what they say and can be used as Visa Debit, but they are actualy a lower rate of Visa Debit. They are basicaly a Visa Electron Debit Card, They will do the same and make much more sense but are Electronic use only meaning they can only be used electronically (ie at POS or ATM)
