Barclays cash card account - Query!?

Hi folks.

I am currently with Halifax with an easycash account and I would be happy to stick with it until the branch in my town moved to another town completely so want a new bank that is local and within walking distance. I am using basic accounts due to past credit problems.
I got rejected for a TSB cash card account for some reason, so was thinking of applying for Barclays cash card account.

Do you get a visa debit card with this account? What are peoples experiences with this account. Does it get credit scored? I can do without another rejection.

Many thanks in advance.

Yes it comes with a visa debit, and you should get it if you have not had any previous problems with Barclays. The easiest one to get is the co-op cashminder which also has a visa debit and you can lodge and withdraw from the post office.

I've never had any dealings with Barclay's at all. But I did get turned down for the BBA about a month ago will this affect the application for the cash card account? I would of gone to the co-op for the cashminder but there isn't a branch near me and I need one within walking distance unfortunately to go in branch and open the account you can't apply online.
To dock and withdraw from the Post Office would be a massive advantage as there is a Post Office at the end of my street about 20 seconds away.

The BBA is credit scored. Cash Card Account isn't, so you go for that account.

Other basic accounts include (comes with debit card):

    Natwest Step Account
    RBS Key Account
    Nationwide Cash Account

I have this account, and it's good. Comes with a debit card. It's not credit scored.

You get account details straight away.

Book12 and ToeJam thanks for your replies.

Book12 - The Natwest Step account I got rejected for as they do credit score this and class it as a 'current' account supposedly.
When you say you get a Visa debit card with the Barclays cash card account is it a Visa Electron like the one I've got with Halifax? or a proper visa debit?

I chatted to one of the web advisor chat team earlier whilst looking at the account page and she was telling me about the cash card account and she said ALL their accounts are credit scored? Are you guys sure it isn't credit scored, don't want to embarass myself!

The Cash Card Account comes with a proper Visa debit card.

When I had that account, it wasn't credit scored. It's just ID check.

Basic accounts are not credit checked usually.

Book, that is what I was led to believe and the page about basic accounts on here state the Barclays Cash Card account and the Co-Op Cashminder account aren't credit scored so I went for the Barclays one with them being a local branch. What does your card look like Book? Does it say Visa Electron on it? The web chat person for Barclays said it was a Full Visa card as per the other current accounts but with 'Electron' technology which led me to believe it was a Visa Electron.

The card says 'Visa debit'. The card you will get on a Cash Card Account is a Visa debit (Connect Electronic). It is Barclays way of distinguishing cards issued on Cash Card Accounts and BBA.

Connect is Barclays brand of a debit card. Still a Visa debit.
  • I recently applied for a basic bank account with barclays to use as I have just become bankrupt , I was advised they are bankrupt friendly so I went and applied in branch was there about an hour and after all that I was declined due to credit scoring ? The lady in the bank says they are getting quite strict now on there basic bank account and that there was nothing else they could do for me.
