  • As I understand it unfortunately the text message notification service only happens in Europe as does the maximum spend per day limit for data charges. Outside the EU it is open season. Also unfortunately it is down to the user to switch roaming off etc . I think the best you can hope for is a "goodwill" gesture fromOrange to reduce the bill a little .

I don't understand why you put 'she was never informed that she was being charged roaming rates.'?

She's outside the UK, of course she'll be changed roaming rates.

I don't think there much you can do other than try for a goodwill quester. She used the phone, the network in Argentina will be changing Orange who will look to charge you.

I am not going to let her pay this extortion as she was never informed that she was being charged roaming rates.
Not true. She was informed of the roaming rates, as the information is all there on Orange's web site where it clearly states "3G data £8.00 per MB". It's her fault if she didn't check the charges for a service before using it.

Nevertheless, there's no justification for data to cost more to use in Argentina than it does when roaming anywhere else. Orange's roaming charges for data are generally way too high anyway. If I were you, I'd complain to Orange about the unjustifiably high charges rather than your wife's failure to check the price of the service before using it.

You might want to ask Orange to justify why they charge £8/MB for data usage in Argentina when their competitors all charge less. Vodafone charges £3/MB; O2 and Three charge £6/MB; and T-Mobile charges £7.50/MB (but they're now the same company as Orange).

While writing this, I see that the OP replied to Exhortation's post with a retaliatory comment, then deleted it, and then removed his original post. That's not how these forums work. I can only assume that the OP removed his original post after becoming embarrassed at the folly of using a service before checking the price of the service.

It's my understanding that each roaming network negotiates it's own roaming deal with other networks (and I stand to be corrected, it's not a dept I've ever worked in).

I can see a situation where the roaming traffic in an area grows and the home network there then jacks the price up. The UK network can then either pay up or not offer roaming in that area.

The disparate of price will be due to each UK network having a different agreement renewal dates and contract lengths.

I'm not trying to defend Orange's pricing, I'm just offering a possible reason for the difference in each networks charges...

That could be true, but the above charges are not specific to Argentina, but for all non-European countries. Orange's data roaming charges are higher across the board. All the networks seem to based their data roaming charges on distance from the UK rather than on the amount they are charged by the foreign networks. Distance from the UK has no relevance to data charges and so it's inappropriate to charge more for data roaming in Argentina than in Norway for example.
