He has always struggled with maths, he has sat his maths GCSE twice and got a D both times.
He is not allowed to apply again for a year, does anyone know if all army/navy tests are at a similar level please?
He is really annoyed at himself for failing.
The maths part is harder in the Navy due to the emphasis placed on navigation.I should add that the tests are all top secret and as an assessor I risk being court-martialled for treason by even telling you this.Howev er here goes;volumes and conversion rates are a must as is the grasp of bearings and trigonometery.Your son may feel a bit of a numpty but remember that Nelson himself truanted and left for sea before sitting his GCSEs,and that Admiral Jellicoe was completely bemused by bookmakers' odds and backed the Kaiser to win WW1 by Xmas 1917.0 -

Is your name Walter by any chance? Give it a rest.0 -
Has your Son considered The Royal fleet auxiliary.

I can only assume they are facing cuts like everyone else but they will always need a certain amount of recruits.
Civilian not military ,but work very closely with R.N. especially.
I had 6 good years with them.
One point about RFA ...It is all sea time. Not long periods spent in a base on land.0 -
A bit depressing isnt it.
My youngest is about to start 3 years of uni - taking outdoor sports studies and he is thinking of joining the services after. it sounds like he needs to start his application now as he might be one who fails the isometric tests on the 1st or 2nd attempt becasue his maths is also at the D level. And by the time he has passed these he could be on a waiting list to join or years ....
Mhoc - was your son planning on going in as an officer or as a rating?
Reason I ask is that if he was planning on going in as an Officer then whilst he has to sit the tests the same as a rating entrant (as well as having the same medical and having to meet the same fitness tests) he will also have to pass the Admiralty Interview Board (AIB) as well.
Junior was hoping to join straight after 6th form but the defence cuts may mean that he has to rethink his plans.....fortunately he also applied to Uni so he has something to do post August (hopefully!)
The reason for joining after 6th form is that the RN would have paid for him to a degree whilst training at his trade (I think it's in association with the OU)
The other thing he could consider is University Sponsorship ?2014 Target;
To overpay CC by £1,000.
Overpayment to date : £310

If its anything like Army undergraduate Bursary he won't get anywhere near it with a D in maths I'm afraid0 -

Thanks for this, will get him to have a look when he is home today, you are a star!Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together.0 -
AFAIK the army don't do psychometric tests, well they never used to when hubby joined anyway and Im pretty sure they still dont0

I did psychometric tests in the 80s before joining the army, I also had the distraction of a thicky infantry wanabe telling me the wrong answers and that I was doing it wrong. (He actually told me that untied boats made their way upriver against the flow on their own). The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

OMG! How thick am I!! How could I have forgotten about the BARB??? Im very sorry for misinforming! (shakes head at herself, all those years at uni studying psychology in psychometric tests is obviously lost on me)
On the plus side the BARB is easier then for example the RAF AST.0
