new laptop - what software to remove?

From the question asked, I'd suggest the inquirer isn't ready to go Linux etc, so simple answer perhaps more suitable.

Ubuntu is easy for users, including beginners. If the person is able to arrange un installing security programs, and countless other things, and then installing apps of choice, then creating restore discs, (sounds like a lot of work to me), then installing Ubuntu as a dual boot system is a pretty mindless and easy task. And using it is easier then using Windows.

I use Ubuntu on my netbook but it's simply not a solution for everyone - my nieces want MSN Messenger, while there are some cheesy replacements on Ubuntu, they want the real thing. Also some faults are fairly difficult to fix.And using it is easier then using Windows.
Very debatable.0 -
I hate OEM installs of windows as they are always crudded up. best advice would have been get a laptop that includes a vanilla win OS disc as then you can choose which crap to install.
Linux is easy enough until you get a filesystem corruption or a driver plays up then your non techy user will have problems and probably get a lot of abuse on a linux forum because the fix is described on page 47 of some other thread and they obviously haven't bothered to look for a fix themselves. There's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.0 -
Great information CGK1, but, I think I would rather buy Kasperski, than risk changing banks with all that entails, and the risk of problems arising.
Others take note though!!0 -

They simply issue you a one year licence key in the same way as if you'd paid for it. It makes absolutely no odds if you got it one day and changed bank the next, you simply wouldn't be able to renew it for free at the end of the year.0
