As the title says I have just booked a week in a holiday cottage in Cornwall in August for £500 (which I think is a good deal based on what I found elsewhere) and I am very excited so wanted to tell someone so thought I would tell you all.

We have been to Cornwall before but not since we had children (who will be 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 when we go) and we have never taken a holiday in August as we like to avoid busy times but now I work in a school we have no choice. So I wondered if any of you lovely people know the quieter spots to visit in Cornwall during peak times. Maybe any lesser known places. We will be staying near Boscastle. We love Trebarwith Strand but have only ever been in May and it's always quiet but wondered if it gets a lot busier during peak time, or is it generally a nice quiet place?

Any suggestions would be appreciated as we have had a difficult few months with my health which has affected all of us and I am still poorly (hoping to be well enough to enjoy this holiday and needed something to look forward to) so I really feel we all need a good holiday and my husband and children deserve a treat for being so supportive.

I live 15 mins from Boscastle. You will love it and it is a perfect location to discover the beautiful rugged coast of North Cornwall. Trebarwith does get busy in August, but to be honest you have so many small beaches to choose from it should not be a problem. Buy yourself the western morning news when you are here as they always have offers for attractions, your children would probably love a day out at Colliford, http://www.collifordlakepark.co.uk/ its a small time themed park really for younger children, with almost-home made little rides, animals to pet and see and an indoor ball park. All very low key but enjoyable from about 2 years onwards. You can take a picnic and walk around the lake or just sit on the benches in the woodland and watch the deer. There are owls, guinea pigs, chickens, duck, that sort of thing. Colliford would be about 30 mins away, but at Trethorne, http://www.trethorneleisure.com/ near Launceston there is a similar sort of thing called Trethorne Leisure, but is always busy and probably more expensive! It does also have a bowling alley (well skittles really) a bar and restaurant and golf course.

There is a very short steam railway trip to be had at Launceston http://www.launcestonsr.co.uk/ which is about 20/25minutes away and was the capital or Cornwall, it has a castle and very small selection of shops, but probably the worlds best butchers - Warrens. So buy a couple of sausages and do yourself the best BBQ.

Boscastle is very quaint and you can spend as little or much time as you want. Padstow is about 25 mins away where you can walk the harbour, the children can try their hand with a crab line (my son started at two) and then have a delicious fish and chip supper from Rick Steins (chippy not restaurant). Nothing like fighting off the seagulls! http://www.rickstein.com/Steins-Fish-and-Chips.html

Of course the north has beaches a plenty from Bude down to Newquay and beyond. A drive through the Helford passage, some hour west, will just take your breath away. But anywhere and just about everywhere is child friendly and if you always have a picnic on board, you can pitch up and stop wherever you like.

If you want any further info, don't hesitate to update this thread or pm.
  • What kind of details would you like greenface?

Thanks both for your replies. I will have to look back to this thread closer to the time to remind me of those places but it's nice to think about it now to try to perk me up a bit, give me something to look forward to. Although I am feeling really stressed at the mo anyway as I am having the annual car insurance renewal battle! And then I'll have it again just before we go away in August ready for my husbands car insurance. Think I will definately need the holiday if it's this stressful again!

I don't know much about the Boscastle area but I grew up in Cornwall and my Mum used to take me to Dairyland every birthday which is mid Cornwall. It was amazing!! Also my godson loves Diggerland?! but I haven't been there. Good if you've got boys I think.

    wow, that is really reasonable.

i've just looked at website. oct half term is only £295 for the week ! wow.

in oct were be a family of 2 adult, 3 children age 8,6,3 and a 8 week ( ish) old baby. i wonder if it suitable in the woodpeckers. says 4 adults , 2 children and cot ? might have to phone and ask.
  • I would think it would be suitable dor you. It has a double bedroom, twin bedroom and bunk bedroom with a cot I think so can't see why it wouldn't suit you as long as you feel your children are old enough to go in bunk beds.
