Daughter is due to have her 1st baby in 2 weeks, she's now on maternity leave, and she's got a excemption card for prescriptions.
But i was told today that the baby when it comes is entitled to things like gripe water and sudocream free. on prescription.
I've been buying these weekly,
have i been told correct?
thanks

Babies get free prescriptions for medical items but most doctors won't prescribe items for everyday use. So if baby presents with severe nappy rash, then you could expect to get a free prescription for a suitable nappy cream but you won't get one for a standard barrier cream for every nappy change. Similarly if baby has colic, you may get a prescription for colief or something similar, but you won't get something to keep in the cupboard just in case.
After 3 kids, one with gastro issues, I still have no idea what gripe water is btw! Does anyone still use it these days? I thought it was that stuff with alcohol in that parents years ago used to use to drug their kids to sleep...0 -
Gripe water always made both my girls gag, not surprised as it absolutely stinks! We used infacol, much nicer for them. Agree with Nicki, not many dr's will prescribe standard things you can buy cheaply in most shops.0

Gripe water's for getting up wind Nicki, not a sleeping aid!! I agree with the other 2 posters - I think you've been misinformed about things for day to day use.0

Gripe water used to contain alcohol, and some parents would give it to 'relax' their children - my mother certainly did for me!!0 -
How interesting faithcecilia! I used it with my daughter now and again when infacol didn't work on the wind. Probably knocked her out instead then!!0

Yep. It used to be called Shankhill vodka back home, and contained a good slug of the aforementioned ingredient. Let's just say it wasn't used by the nct type mums :rotfl:0 -
Shankhill vodka, hilarious!! Just googled gripewater and it says that in the past it contained alcohol, but it's been taken out of the product in recent years. My DD is not yet 4 so I doubt when I used it there was alcohol in it. However my nan recommended it to me, so I bet my dad had been dosed up on it in the past!0

I'm not sure how much sudocreme you have bought OP, but my son is 14 months old and we still haven't yet finished the little sample pot you get in the Bounty bag in hospital. A little goes a long way so I wouldn't stock up too much.
I believe you can get many day to day children's medicines free if the chemist you use is enrolled in the minor ailments scheme, but I very much doubt a doctor would issue a prescription for them unless there was a chronic condition.:DYummy mummy, runner, baker and procrastinator0 -
As previously posted, Doctor will only prescribe for severe cases of nappy rash, like my little one had. I was told to buy metanium cream & given a prescription for a cream to stop the rash getting infected.SOA = Statement of Affairs (to find a SOA Calculator, google 'make sense of cards' & click on calculators tab > Statement of Affairs)0
