2 ports on router not working

Options
I've had trouble with a desktop (upstairs) that had trouble connecting to the internet wirelessly so decided to hard wire it. But it will not work in the 2 spare ports in the router (Netgear DGN2000) but works in the port this computer uses.
Now not sure what to do!
Last time I rang Netgear they wanted money for advice as it was out of warranty!
Thought this might be an option on ebay,

8 Port 10/100 Network Ethernet Switch,
but I would rather sort the router out if possible.

Any ideas?

does the port light come on? using same network lead?

most isp's will give you a free one with a bit of persuasion, a switch is an extra layer of complexity

Yes it lights up, but will not connect, although it works in the port I am using.
It is my own router which my son's told me was better for their Xboxes which they use wirelessly no problem.

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

I tried that and it takes ages to download, so I have swapped the cable round again to the port I use and I am working from the upstairs computer now with no problem.
It makes me think that ports 1 and 2 are working fine but ports 3 and 4 are really slow to download if at all.

Tried that in ports 3 and 4.
"this operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"
    not sure what that means,
    Still connects in port 1.

does any pc work in port 3 or 4 , with different cables?

does the cable seat properly in the router, and is it a home made crimp, or bought lead?
