Online grocery shopping delivery - awkward?

My OH and I have a little system going, we go out to the van and bring the crates in ourselves, dump the stuff on the kitchen floor and then stack the crates by the front door. We then just sign his machine thingy, always give him a tip and say thanks so much. I've worked in jobs previously where I've had to work late so I can appreciate how crappy it can feel, you're out working while everyone is tucked up at home.ITV Winners Club #87 :eek:0

I do similar to Celyn, usually though i just ask them to dump it in the hall so i can sort it out whenever, but today cause my back is flared up again and i cant bend, the driver brought it into the kitchen for me so i could unload it direct onto the table or worksurfaces. whilst i was unloading the first couple of crates the driver got the rest and then helped me unload before taking my recycling carriers with him.
ive used sainsburys, tesco and asda and they have all asked where i want the shopping putting letting me take the lead.0 -
My house is over three levels so downstairs is the kitchen, Im quite friendly with the drivers and they tend to bring the crates down for me. I unload and dump on kitchen floor
I make general chitchat normally things like have you had a busy day... much more left to do.. Sometimes they like a little consideration.
Dont feel awkward there doing their job and i assumer your not the only person that has to do that.
Our poor delivery drivers get asked tons on q`s from my young daughters unlucky them, so seems to break the ice a little.mum to; Two Boys (Non id twins)Two Girls (Id twins)0 -

OMG - are we expected to tip! Now that is awkward...
Does the amount given depend on the value of the order like in restaurants - 15%. Do they share it with the packers back at base. I think we ought to know.0 -
the drivers here all bring my delivery into the kitchen where i unload the crates on to the kitchen worktops, they usually give me the fridge and frozen stuff seperately so that I can put them away straight away.

I have been online shopping for years and never found a driver that will come into my house let alone my kitchen. I asked a few times (tesco, asda and sainsburys) and have been told by all of them that they are not insured to cross the threashold of any property and can only come as far as the door?I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Competitions Time, Shopping & Freebies boards, Employment, Jobseeking & Training boards If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. There is no need to tip.~*~ If you don't need it, it isn't a bargain ~*~0 -
I am up a flight of stairs so they tend to bring up two crates at a time, I must admit I do rush to get everything out of those crates and shoved inside before the next two arrive. Last time the driver said 'no need to hurry' but tbh I don't want to make chit chat with the delivery person, not because I a snob but because I'm just no good at banter unless I know someone.~*~ If you don't need it, it isn't a bargain ~*~0

we have tesco deliveries and our kitchen is at the back of the house and deliveries come to the front door (there's a shared right of way at the back of our mid terrace with several gates to negotiate making back door deliveries a hassle). OH and i usually take the delivery in together. i unload the crates while driver gets more crates and takes empties back. OH takes bags of stuff through to kitchen then i put stuff away into cupboards etc. when driver has gone. we get done very quickly and the driver isnt hanging around, we see it as he has many deliveries to get done in his shift so its best to make the process as quick as poss. we never tip the driver (never heard of this before) because tesco charge enough as it is.
i tried a bagless delivery once and it was hard work and slow getting the stuff in. the driver said people who have regular bagless deliveries have plastic boxes ready to take their shopping so it is quicker. i stick to bagged deliveries now and appease my conscience by using the carrier bags for rubbish later.Wins: 2008: £606.10 2009: £806.24 2010: £713.47 2011: 328.320 -
Just an off-topic thought: a few people have been saying how they prefer bagged deliveries but feel guilty about using carrier bags. Charity shops are usually desperate for bags and will be very grateful to take them off your hands. Maybe not the bigger shops, but certainly local charity/hospice shops. HTH.

I only had online shopping brought couple of times, but each time they asked me where I want it and I pointed at the kitchen so they put it in there and I was unloading it on my kitchen top while they were bringing in the rest.. and then they were messing with their machine for signature when there was no more to be brought in..
No awkwardness at all... They are even supposed to wait until you make sure everything is in date or not in last date of use (so you can send it back) so believe me, they are used to it!!!!!!
You are over thinking it.0
