O2 'We're moving you to a new tariff', not happy - want to change ??

I have been a customer of O2 for years (10+), and have been on their 'Pay Upfront' tariff for the past few years (where I paid for 12 months in advance, which last year was about £50, which included free minutes etc.) This tariff is apparently no longer available, so they tell me that they will be moved over to their 'Pay Monthly' tariff - which is £10 per month. Obviously I don't think this is a particularly good deal!

Basically I only use the phone for emergencies and very occasional calls (usually about 3 calls a month, about 1 text every 3 months). I am not a heavy user, and it's just a basic Nokia phone.

So: what are my best options? I've been thinking about switching to PAYG, but I am a bit concerned about the stories of numbers being suddenly cancelled - I am disabled, so I don't want to be stranded somewhere without a working phone. I am willing to switch networks for a better deal. I'm not bothered about retaining my current number.

I have one month to choose another option, I apparently have to phone O2 on 03/02/11 to cancel my current contract.... So, this coming Thursday then!

Any suggestions from you good people?

Most PAYG numbers will not be cancelled provided a chargeable event (eg a call or text) is made from the phone at least once every 180 days, so for the few calls you make that seems like it wouldn't be a problem.

If your handset is unlocked (as an O2 contract phone, it probably will be) you can stick an Asda SIM card into it for 8p/min calls and 4p texts.

A new SIM card with £10 credit will only cost £5.

If you'd prefer the comfort of a monthly bill for the reassurance that your phone will not be disconnected and with no need to top up you can get a monthly billed account for only £2 a month with calls and texts at 7p each if this is more appealing. The Asda SIM will be cheaper, though, for your usage.

Many thanks for this, I like the sound of the Co-Op pay-as-you-use deal at £2 per month line rental and keep my existing number. I hadn't found that one when searching myself, so thanks Stuart_W !!

I think O2 are about to lose a customer....
