A bit of a longshot but does anyone else have a Golf Mk6 1.6 TDi 105hp (manual gearbox) and if so what kind of fuel economy figures are you getting?

The published combined figures are in the mid/late 60mpg area and I average 45mpg doing much more extra-urban than urban driving.

Also, its worth mentioning that I'm no boy-racer and regularly get higher than the published figures when driving my DH's Discovery and my last car, a Mini.

My most relevant experience is of a Golf Mk4 1.9 90bhp that I had about 8 years ago. It consistently did 60 mpg regardless of conditions. I would expect a Mk6 1.6 to at least match that.

I also had a Mk4 150bhp GTi diesel. That never dropped below 55mpg.

Murray, when you approach a roundabout, traffic lights or give way etc, how do you approach them? Do you drive up to them to the point where you need to apply the brakes and then brake to a stop?

I always slow down as much as possible without breaking and then break if I have too - I try to time it so that I dont have to stop and loose momentum if I can.

I should have mentioned that as well as not being a boy (or girl) racer...I have passed my IAM test so, although I'm no slow coach, I can and do drive sympathetically.

That doesnt make me feel any better!! ;)

I bought this (rather bland) car because it was economical and its not! Any idea's where I stand, VW are claiming that they cant find a fault with the car and messing me around and fobbing me off something chronic!

It must be false advertising or something.

I have a horrible feeling that the only way I'll be able to prove & have them pay any attention is to put through the fuel economy test cycle...sounds expensive. They've already had the car for a week and deemed that the figures that they got (lower than mine over the same sort of journey) were more than acceptable.... I feel like I'm banging my head on a brick wall!

Ah, no problem, just checking because driving as I mentioned uses a fair bit more fuel. You'll most likely have been taught how to drive economically as part of the IAM course then.

How many miles are on the car? If it is just new the fuel economy will gradually improve. I have the 2.0 litre TDi and the fuel economy got a lot better after 5 or 6k.
  • I have found that modern diesels cant get anyware near their quoted mpg figures,
Not sure why mabe down to new fuel mixes or manufacturers doctering their cars to fit in lower emmision brakets.

I had a b6 passsat 2.0tdi and it couldnt match or even come close to my old 1.9pd engined passat

Where do you usually fill up?

There's a thread on here at the moment about people saying that they get much poorer MPGs from Tesco fuel than some other places etc. Not sure how much of a difference it would make to your car, but thought it might be worth bringing up.
