Yeah they are on 20 percent VAT, as the bills are still high when converted to the metric rate. Personally I think it's unfair that all their heating for the home is at business rates, but as the shop is downstairs it's the same property so they have to pay the expensive rate :(

Ask BG to send out a VAT declaration form for your Father to complete, then they'll only be charged 20% VAT on the shops use.

While BG are taking their time to resolve this, the people to blame are the meter operator/supplier at the time the meter was exchanged who failed to update the industry records.

I would get you parents to check ever bill from the date the meter was exchange to check that the old suppler(s) was billing correctly. Normally there will be a tag on the meter giving the date of exchange and meter readings.

  • Just a final update to this thread.

Last weekend myself and my brother sat down with my parents to chase BG one final time before speaking to the ombudsman. We composed a letter detailing all the problems and sent it to BG. I managed to find an email address for the CEO as well, and sent it to him.

At the start of the week my father received an email from the CEO's office with a named representative who would look into it. By the middle of the week she had made contact and has resolved the issue, and has placed them on a lower tariff by way of an apology. They are going to look over all the contacts and speak to the agents involved.

My father forgot to mention the non response he had from homecare but is so glad to finally see the back of this nightmare.

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice and pointed us in the right direction.

Does sound like poor service on BG's part, which honestly surprises me, as I have been with them now for 4 years, nearly 5, and they have always been great, any issues sorted out promptly, friendly staff, bills are rarely incorrect and if so, again rebilled promptly, and my DD is always correct, but there is always going to be problems with any supplier. Now Npower, theres a different story, I would rather use candles and cook on a camping stove than ever buy my gas and electricity from that shower of an outfit ever again!

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
  • Yes it has been very very bad. Thank good for the good people of the internet though.

The worrying thing is the mentality of the person insisting that the bill was correct!
