Ok folks, before I start I have no idea whatsoever how Linux works or how you type commands into it etc so please bear that in mind. :o

We have one of the Aspire One's that were on offer in Asda a couple of years ago, the ones that run Linux Linpus Lite (I think that is what it is).

Anyway, my husband tried to get online the other night and the box comes up saying connection established but the revolving circle just spins when you have clicked on the internet tab.

No other window is coming up showing that you are online although as I say it does show that we are online.

Haven't got a clue what to do, is it best to use the disk that came with it and do a total reinstall of the system?

If I have to do that, it says on a YouTube vid that I saw to put the disk into your pc then a memory stick and transfer to that then transfer to the Acer.

We only have crap*y low memory sticks, could I transfer it to a 4gb card that is in my mobile phone and then connect the phone to the Acer as if it is a memory stick?

Ta.

sb44 I'm so pleased to see this post - not that I can help at all but I've got the absolute identical problem, out of the blue it started a couple of weeks ago.

    PLEASE SOMEBODY, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Anything not involving a memory stick would be good - completely & utterly clueless technophobe speaking.

Sorry I do not have an Acer Aspire One but you should find the answers that you need here

  • I agree that the AspireOneUser forum is a good source of help.

I have an AA1 myself, and it has been running with Linpus Lite for more than 2 years. I use both WiFi and mobile broadband with it, and have never needed to do a restore.

    Hi

I'm using Linux for some years now, this is not a reason for a total reinstalation. First thing to do is to visit linux limpus forums and ask for advice. Linux community is very helpfull and they will solve your problem in notime. If however you will deside to go for a total new system then the best thing to do is to is to go to a website called pendrivelinux, choose a distribution that you like (I'm using linux mint or ubuntu which is very popular) follow the instructions from there and install the operating sustem to a memory stick, 1gb or 2gb is fine. Boot the netbook from the stick and you will be good to view your files, browse the internet and if this works you can choose to install.

Thanks for the info folks, I will take a look later.

I'm in no rush to get it sorted now as we bought another Acer Aspire yesterday, one of the Tesco Acer Aspire ones from the Grabbit forum and that uses Windows 7 Starter (and Android) so I am happy to use that at the minute.

I will go and have a browse on the Linpus forums though and TRY and figure out what they are talking about.

If you download ubuntu and put it onto a memory stick of 1GB or more then not only will it be good for your old acer but you can use it on the newer one too, at least as a standby tool for data recovery. good luck.

Do I need a certain version of Ubuntu for the Acer Aspire One?

I don't have any memory sticks other than the wristbands that my daughter has and they aren't even 1MG.

I have a 4gb micro card in my mobile, could I connect the mobile to the pc and download Ubuntu to that then transfer that via the usb to the Linux Acer?

The netbook version 10.04 will be good, or maybe the netbook version 10.10 they are available from
    10.10
    http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook
    10.04
    http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso

A CD contains over 700MB of stuff and you would need more than that, so this is the reason for needing a USB stick of 1GB (1000MB) or more. The prices have come down a lot and you can buy a 2GB or a 4GB stick now for the cost of what 1GB used to be. If you don't want to keep it as a live USB when finished with, just clean it off and use is for backing up your docs or photos or whatever.

It is pretty unlikely to work.
