Found the following figures for total primary school pupils each year, which may help people who were interested in knowing:
03/04 174,167
04/05 171,998
05/06 169,946
06/07 168,184
07/08 166,639
08/09 164,811
09/10 163,771
albeit it isn't further divided into how many were in P7 in each of these years. Year 7 numbers for 09/10 are available to view at:
Primary schools data 2009/10, Excel 647 KB
and the Year 6 numbers at same should give an indication of the Year 7 numbers for 2010/11.

wherre have all the children gone:search:?????? There are over 10,000 less in 09/10 than there were in 03/04!:hello:0 -
It would be interesting for a parent of a child refused admission to a PPTC school using grade (Lagan College for instance) to challenge the decision. Such an approach would require the revelation of scores of others of the same "grade" admitted to the school. This would likely result in an ending of the use of grades which hide rather than provide information.;)0

Had interview with principle today feeling alot better now forms are signed! Put down 3 grammars and 2 high schools now it's a matter of keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best!! The principle was telling me how my daughter is a mature intelligent and well manner girl who is a pleasure to have at his school - no what? I left the interview thinking so what if she doesn't get into a grammar school I clearly doing something right to have a headmaster speak so highly of her! So proud of her!0

I fail to see the issue Martin. An A is an A, a B is a B. Whether you are 1 mark inside the boundary for an A or 20 marks inside it makes no difference at all.
If you don't like the system you're in for a long, rocky road. GCSE's, AS and A levels all use grading. And, even worse (from your point of view) is the University system! You don't even get a grade! Someone who gets 70% at University gets the EXACT same degree as someone who gets 100%.
Anyway, well done to all of those who's wee uns did the exams. If Ruane had her way education in NI would be up the left. Personally I'm a big fan of the Dickson plan (prefer it over the 11 plus system) and HOPEFULLY by the time I send my kids through school I can still send them to a grammar school (if they're smart enough!).0 -
Luckily for you Armagh Royal is one of the easiest 'grammar schools' to get into. Not many applicants fail to get in. It's harder to get into some non-selective schools than it is to Armagh Royal. Two siblings should be enough to swing it.
Hi 36 square, thanks for that. Is this just recent years or has it always been like that?
My real grievance at the moment is the fact that my daughter's PS did absolutely nothing to teach for the test!!0 -
Pmum,
Yes son sat GL also this was my backup plan just in case he didnt do well in AQE,
got B2, and a "there you go" score of 87 in AQE.
A friend of mine was at Lagan college open day ,she did manage to speak to the headmistress.
the question she put to the headmistress was ,"Depending on the results, can I put a.n. other school first and Lagan second? and if so would this affect her positioning to get into Lagan College ?"
The reply she got was a blunt, "Lagan has to be first on the list to get a place".
Luckily the child got 103 in AQE so no worries there.
So as you can see, my main concern was if I did not put Lagan first there would be a strong possibility that a.n. other child, regardless that they may have a lower individual point score, but within same grade, would be accepted before my son ,irrespective of the clearing system within DE. By the way son is only child in family.0 -
Pigsmightfly,
That sounds a bit strange. I don't see how they could accept a child with a C1 ahead of a child with a B2 unless they had filled up their Grammar stream allowance.
And their published criteria (the only thing they can use) seems to me to state they would accept applicants in Grade order and only use other criteria if a particular grade is over subscribed. They seem to have accepted pupils with C1 last year which would imply they took all the kids with B2 who applied.
I think it would be worth checking up on that yourself.
Hope it all works out for you and your wee one.0 -
thanks Pmum , the looooooong wait is on then.0

As per Dept of Education website the NI primary pupil figures for 2009/10 -
BELB - P6 - 3,300 / P7 - 3,444
WELB - P6 - 3,990 / P7 - 4,195
NEELB - P6 - 5,067 / P7 - 5,317
SEELB - P6 - 4,694 / P7 - 4,935
SELB - P6 - 5,172 / P7 - 5,437
Children in P7 this year preparing for transfer are the P6 figures above. Each area shows a reduction in the number of P7 pupils this year compared to last year. Total number of P7 last year = 23,328. Total number of P7 this year = 22,223.
So, less pupils.........could this mean a lower test score this year has a slightly better chance of making it to grammar school?0
