Thanks for these replies they are very useful
However, I am trying to teach my daughter the odd thing like jump starting a car, changing a wheel etc so she will not feel so stupid standing there waiting for someone.

Bravo to you ! It amazes me the number of people who drive and do not know the basics like how to check oil, water, change a wheel etc - and even taking on board the caveats that have been mentioned earlier, how to jump-start a car. Even if they have no interest in mechanics at all, there are certain skills that every driver should have ( in fact, I believe in some countries it forms part of the test ???? )

I've told my step-daughter that her first car lessons will be:
Where the spare is and how to change it
Where things are under the bonnet, and how to change oil/water etc.

Her father has no problem with this- neither of us want a 0300hrs call due to a flat tyre!

As above, I believe it should be part of the test (not sure if it is now, wasn't when I did it.) If you're using something, you should have at least a part idea of how it works. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm knowledgable enough to fix most things on my car.

Not in Scotland. When I lived there I used to stop for everyone in distress and I'd expect the same if I was ever in trouble there.

One time coming down the A9 about 6 cars stopped to help someone and I was the guy with the same car and thus correct wheelbrace.

Duct tape & WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn't- Duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should- WD-40!

Cable ties and a multi tool are a help too.

I think basic mechanical stuff is part of the test (south of the boarder at least) and has been for a while. Don't know how involved though

The only tools I carry are for wheel changing! The last (only) time my car broke it shattered the stupid plastic fanbelt pulley, shredding the belt in the process.

I'm pretty sure WD40, pliers or duct tape would'nt have helped ;)

    The AA did!
