IVF Pregnancy Dates??? Confused New Dad???

Please help, my partner had her IVF egg collection and my sperm sample done on the 6th Dec 2010, implantation was done on the 9th Dec 2010, i am really struggling to work out our due dates and exactly how we calcuate the time periods in how far gone she is???
The confusion for me is my partner has a scan on Friday 4th 2011, which to me says she's in her 11th week??? Is'nt this the wrong date for a scan if its supposed to be a 12 week scan which is checking for the Downs symptoms???
I'm reading every book and forum going and every time i put in dates it comes back with different dates for due and how far gone???

Scans can be done at any time after about 6 weeks.
I am just guessing, but the scan might be an early one ( about 8ish weeks perhaps??) to acertain if she is indeed pregnant.
The 12 week scan can be done at a later date.

I'm sure someone more knowledgable about IVF will come along and let you know what to expect.

Good luck and I hope it's successful!!!

I dont know anything about IVF, but I know that generally in the UK pregnancy is counted from the last menstrual period, not the date of likely conception. In that case its likely to be a 12th week scan, if that makes sense?

Happy to stand corrected by those that know more.

  • I don't know about IVF but usually a pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period, though conception happens around two to three weeks after this.

This can cause surprise and embarrassment- a friend fell pregnant very early in a new relationship, went for a scan prior to termination. She was told she was six weeks pregnant. Cue one very angry partner arguing that it wasn't his as they'd only been together five weeks... :eek:Luckily the sonographer managed to explain it for him..
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

In IVF the ovulation date is usually replaced by the egg retrieval. If your wife had a fresh transfer (embryos not frozen first) then count back 14 days from the day of retrieval and use the date this gives you in place of a last menstrual period date. You can either use any due date calculator on the net or just count on 40 weeks.
HAving done this quickly for you, I worked out your wife is now around 10 weeks pregnant with a due date of 29th of August.
You may still get a slightly different due date at your scan as it depends on when implantation took place and a few other things, but it should be pretty close to this date.
Don't worry about the scan being too early. If the doctors/sonographer feel it is too early to view what they are looking for, they will book you in for another one.
    Congratulations:)

    I had twins via IVF.

Two weeks after the implantation, I went back for a blood test which checks for pregnancy hormones. Has your wife had this done yet? If so, and it was positive, congratulations!

If it hasn't been done yet (for whatever reason) then you need to be sure it has worked (crossed fingers for you, I know exactly how you're feeling!).

After that, the advice above - from nikkikuk - is correct re dates.

  • Congrats OP :)

Not sure how they work out dates for IVF but if you are referring to the nuchal scan (which gives you your risk factors for Downs) then that can be carried out between 11 and 13 weeks.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I think transfer date usually happens around the time of natural ovulation (presuming she ovulated) so as soon as the egg implants she is automatically classed as 2 week pregnant already as 2 weeks prior to that would have been the first day of her last period (a artificial pregnancy start date given by doctors, pregnancy only lasts 38 weeks on average but + the 2 artificial weeks gives us 40, a more convenient time scale as a LMP is easier to remember than a ovulation date)

Has anyone ever wondered why when you add it up in weeks pregnancy lasts 9 and a half months?
  • ah ok thank you all it makes sense now, she already had 1 scan at 7 weeks and this one on friday going off these comments will mean it is roughly the 12 week scan, very happy and thank you for all the positive comments
  • A nurse at our clinic calculated my due date, and told me nobody else was to change it ...lol. Congratulations :D
