Help to find my product key or sort windows problem.

Okay I turned on my laptop today and got a message saying "This copy of windows is not genuine" I know 110% it is genuine because I bought the laptop xmas 2009 from Currys. It has been away being repaired and I got it back mid January and today this message has come up.

I can't read the product key from the label underneath as it has worn away with always being rested on my lap. I have tried to see if I could figure out what the digits were but I can't.

Is there another way to find my product key online with Currys or Microsoft? I don't want to have to send it away again but it seems like I will have to.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Probably the easiest is to use the Magic Jelly Bean Finder to retrieve your key, and then give MS a call, explain the situation and they will re-activate it for you. Generally they don't seem to make a fuss if it sounds genuine, as this often happens when parts are replaced on the PC/laptop.

Good point - I'd forgotten that. Possibly a Windows Update causes it temporarily? We'll probably never know...

Have you had any hardware repaired or replaced?

I can't remember what it said on the reciept I got after it was repaired but it went to be fixed as it wouldn't charge up. I did notice that when I got it back and started up the laptop it came up with "Gateway" which It hadn't before. I think your right Browntoa.

they have reused a spare from another machine of the same make (probably not even new !!! ) but forgotten that it has the gateway Bios loaded on it so will fail WGA (good old Tech Guys ) . If its an Advent or other type of Laptop it need the BIOS loaded for that make of Machine on the new Motherboard

You need to go back to the repairers, for them to re-install the OS. You could do it yourself, but unless you have done it before, it might not be the best thing for you to do. Besides, why should you do their work for them?
