Any foster carers?

  • Have you had a child placed with you yet?

No not yet as I said in the other post I am in training but have known foster carers my whole life and so know an awful lot about it, my Mum also work along with ofsted so I know about that side of things too.

I guess with my training it's all still fresh in my head plus a family friend has been a foster carer for 27 years I get much help and great information from her and her husband.

I know some agencies and councils work differently hence why I advised the lady to ask her daughter to contact them for more information.

Not all agencies want family to be CRB checked, only if the child will be left in their care alone. The fact that some foster children are allowed to stay at friends houses suggests also that CRB's are not wanted from everyone.

I'd call the agency and ask for advice.

    Why is it crowded?

Grandma and Grandad share one room (their normal bedroom), daughter and husband share the other spare bedroom, the 2 girls (1 foster girl and 1 grandaughter) share another spare bedroom and grandson has sitting room (just at night) with blow-up bed.

    We have 2 bathrooms.

As for taking foster child on holiday, did they need a room of their own.

Do Agency rules differ from Council rules, and 'no' we have not been checked out by Social Services. Our daughter has never mentioned this.

I agree with you there, my parents have not been asked to be CRB checked only people who live in the family home will be checked.

I guess some agencies and councils 'may' work differently and want different things, but the staying at your house I can't see a problem with, I spoke to my social worker today and just bought it up she said I could go to visit my parents as normal with a foster child depending on their situation but in most cases it would be allowed.

Again this may not be the case for every child or every agency, but it's always worth an ask and doesn't seem right to me. Good luck :)

I apologise, I misread your other post and thought you only had two bedrooms, not two spare rooms!

When I've taken foster children on holiday, he was either the only child or he shared with his brother (they had their own rooms at home).

One time when we fostered we had lodgers and they had to be checked out before we had someone placed with us but I'm not sure that my parents were. The question of sleepovers with friends didn't arise.

I am lucky I guess because it's just me and my son so only myself needs the checks and no one else so saves some time I guess.

It's a long process and difficult because [as you know] you need to change life some what for the foster child. I think all with good reason as I can't imagine how these poor kids feel going to a strangers home :(

I can't wait to start but am also wondering what will happen as you never really know.

Would be great if you could give me some of your personal experiences? are you with an agency or council? how long have you been fostering and has it all be ok or any real problems?

    Thanks :)
