enter your post code and call the correct number.

Because you have a baby they MUST provide you with emergency heating. i.e electric heaters.

Even if they are not your provider they should help as it is good for their public relations.

If this does not work, let me know

    A :-)

I thought they had to leave you some sort of heating? My boiler broke down a couple of weeks ago, then when the gas engineer couldn't fix it as it needed a part he didn't have, he left me a little electric heater. But my LL has 3* British Gas Homecare, so maybe it was due to this?

  • Thanks guys, i've just come home after spending a nice warm evening round my mum's! Now back in the ice cavern!!

I really appreciate all the advice given, i really haven't got a clue when it comes to house problems and i feel so much more clued up now thanks to you all!

Will be on the phone first thing in the morning to all the various people you mentioned to try and get some temporary heating and to sort this big mess out.

    Anyway, thanks again! :)

My heart goes out to you, we have been without heating or hot water for 6 days after our old combi decided to die! Its really hard to imagine until you go through it, and with a baby I cannot imagine what you are going through. I do hope you get something sorted very very quickly. I would try and find another flat A.S.A.P. and also report the landlord. Good Luck!

If you have any intention of getting out of your tenancy agreement without the usual notice period, try to have as much evidence as you can in writing - so phone the council and record the person's name then follow up with an e-mail. Sounds like you already have a paper trail of past failings, this latest safety issue leaves the house legally uninhabitable (no hot water). If he is stupid enough to threaten legal action you play your trump card: remember reporting him protects other tenants and potential tenants from this cowboy.

OP: how about helping yourself and buying/borrowing an electric heater to warm up a room for the time being? That's much better than holding your hand out and expecting someone else to help you. It's not the end of the world and there are people in a far worse position than you around the world.

Are you responsible for your life and well-being (and that of your baby too) or are other people responsible?

Surely if you've been 'responsible' enough to have a child then you've got it in you to know how to keep warm without whinging and blaming the whole world when things go wrong. If you're too helpless to work out how to keep warm then I feel sorry for your baby.

hehehe, tad harsh. But it does seem that people will run to the internet first these days before thinking logically about what to do, although to be fair quite often there is good advice available on the net - for example the British Gas info a few posts up.

It seems a fairly drastic reaction by the gas engineer. I would have thought leaving a safety note that ventilation is inadequate and the appliance must only be operated with a window open until proper ventilation is fitted would be sufficient.

Seriously - don't muck with boiler ventilation. We almost died in a student house years ago because of a poorly ventilated boiler.

Tesco had value branded oil plugin radiators a few months ago in with the fans and the like to keep warm in the meantime - or go ask on freecycle and see if you get any quick results on there... or around relatives in case people have them lurking in the shed.

To be honest - I'd be out and staying with the rellies while I got the full force of the council down on this prat - but don't don't don't don't go mucking and trying to put the boiler back on. We were starting to feel ill (thank God the gas cert ran out when it did) but knew nothing that our boiler was the cause... you really just don't at all!

Do you just come on here to knock other people back??? I detect a note of hostility here. If someone asks for help you shouldn't start taking digs. People in glass houses and all that or are you some sort of judge....
