I wear varifocal specs, and last had a new pair some 10 years ago when I was a bit flush with cash, so I spent a lot on them. Am now having to be very careful with money and in dire need of new ones. Please can anyone tell me whether I would be better going to Specsavers, Vision Express or Boots (or anywhere else - I live in Bucks) ? I still want varifocal lenses, and one of these was offering a BOGOF deal, tho I would rather they halved the cost of one pair rather than giving me a second pair free. Any thoughts, please ?

I too am in the market for new specs and contact lens.
Had free test at D&A and the quote for varifocals was approx £300. I would like to go back to using contact lens and their deal inc solutions and checkups was from £35 per month upwards.
Happened to be in a large Tescos and had a chat. I can get the lens from them for approx £30 for six month supply. Solutions and checkups extra. However specs can be purchased from £20 for single vision which I probably get away with as a spare pair now I am going back to contacts.
Their to put varifocals into the £20 frames they would charge from approx £75.
I have chosen frames at £39.95 and thats the total cost if I go for single vision. They mentioned a deal of 2for1 if I went for the £79.95 frames but I probably don't need two.
Sorry this is a bit vague but I don't have the exact figures to hand. Also, can't comment on quality etc as I haven't had the contact consultation yet.
Has anyone else had experience of Tesco's Optitians?0 -
Best & cheapest ...COSTCO
You have to join but you will save a packet based on High St. prices.
Designer frames and top grade Zeiss lenses for about £100 LESS then D&A.
Excellent optician service too.
By the way I've no axe to grind here, as I get mine paid for by Medicash so I could go anywhere but I think COSTCO are very hard to beat.Peter0 -
My wife and I get specs from https://www.39dollarglasses.com a USA company.
Typically, a pair of varifocals with transition (sunglass effect) lenses cost equivalent of about £80 and arrive from USA in about a week! About £40 less than Specsavers and an excellent product and quicker than from UK! You have to work our pupillary distance but they tell you how (easy).0 -
I went on a site called '39DollarGlasses.com' - maybe all in lower case, not sure. However, I had been to get my eyes tested and didn't want to have the pay the exhorbitant fees of my local optometrist. You go onto the website and put in your details, as given on your prescription (remembering that some of the values might be -(minus) values!!!) and choose what frames you want. About 10 days later your glasses arrive. They do tinted lenses, varifocals, rimless - the list is endless. They are excellent and I would recommend them. The only measurement that they ask for is NOT given by UK firms... the distance between your pupils. I did this myself in the mirror and they are fine. However, you might wish to ask your optometrist for this measurement to save time and any errors.
I can thoroughly recommend the firm. Total price including postage was below £150!0 -
https://www.glassesdirect.co.uk are very good and a fraction of the price of the high st. if you need varifocals they send an optician to your home to take measurements. You do need a prescription, which is yours anyway when you go for an eye test. Opticians are keeping them as they are getting wise to people going on net for their glasses, but it is legally your property......Science is the antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.......0

I've used Glasses Direct and would highly recommend them. They have a section where you can download a photograph of yourself and then 'try' on glasses for style - you can adjust the size of the photo and the glasses to get it just right. I had single vision lenses, very pretty frames and they cost £17.50 including a glasses case and postage. They have basic, but very nice, frames and some designer frames. I found the whole thing incredibly easy to use and a very speedy service - about 5 days altogether to receive them.
ps You can go through Quidco for even more savings...........!0
