Dla april 2011 new rules.

I got a form from DLA in early December regarding the new law in April for higher rate mobility for blind / p sighted.

I phoned them as wasn't sure what it was at first but then said as they didn't have my new number they had to send the form rather than call.

The form asked for my CVI, I was reg in 1984 in a different area, after 3 weeks of phone calls found out due to them moving offices many times since then many records before 1995 are no longer there.

So I went to see my eye specialist and he wrote a letter for me confirming my sight and I am hoping this will be enough for them.

Sight of 3/60, left eye sever reduced vision down to counting fingers, he used medical terms for my sight condition which I believe are, Aphakia and Amblyopia [please excuse spelling if wrong]

Do you think this will be enough? also has anyone else heard from them? my surname is B so think it's why I heard so early.

i saw my consultant learlier this month and hes spitting mad!
he says the anmount of his patients that are registered blind, that will qualify are in single figures.

i have no peripheral fiels and central vision of less than 10 degrees.........but because i can see 2 lines of nice bold letters on a lit background in a dark room..........i wont qualify.

he said id you can read the top letter from 16 feet away you wont qualify!
    its bad really.
i cant read a newspaper, i cant read my own mail. iu cant go out alone. but i can see well enough!
i wenty to the loo when i was on holiday and my hubby waited outside for me. he was 10 feet away and i didnt recognise him until he spoke. but im not blind enough for high rate mobility.
sorry to sound bitter but i am lol
  • I agree with you it's shocking how they have worked this out. Do you need a lot of help? could you get extra help for your care needs? I'm on lower rate for both at the moment but not holding my breath on this.

I attend a group for visually impaired people and the subject of welfare benefits came up. They pretty much said it seems as though very few will qualify.

Has Aphakia in right eye visual acuity of 3/60, left eye sever reduced vision of counting fingers due to amblyopia and suffers from glaucoma in both eyes.
