HELP what to buy/do?

Hello all

I purchased a 2001 Megane from a private seller on Auto Trader last April.

Last week (on route to work) it starts chugging and loses power. One visit by AA mechanic later it has a new coil and new spark plugs and hey presto - chugging resolved.

However, the engineer advised me to sell the car asap as oil is getting into cylinder 1 and the problem will only get worse. The car does use a bit of oil and he showed me one v.oily spark plug.

SO, do I take his advice? I'm currently saving for our wedding next year which is why I purchased an older car last year. Big mistake I now feel. I couldn't sell it on privately myself knowing there is a problem - I would have to part exchange.

All help very much appreciated.

It's worth the square root of sfa, without offence I hope?.

Sell it? :rotfl::rotfl:Sorry that's not gonna work.

You have 1 option only imho and that is to use it and get some value, and get past your wedding, then make a deciscion about the next car< ;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

But surely I can use the car to part-ex at a gargage for another one? The car is still running at the moment, his advice was to sell it before the problem gets worse and the engine packs up. One of those 'could be two weeks - could be 12mnths' situations.

I need a car for work so I have to do something. I can't wait until the wedding has past, that's another 18mnths away.

A 2001 Megane is not worth thousands, whatever its condition.

Of course you can part-exchange it.

Because it's worth relatively little, the garage will not be too fussed about its condition.

But that's up to them, they will inspect your car before they offer you a deal.

You will, of course, truthfully answer any questions they ask about the car, but I doubt there will be very many.

    Thanks for your help guys

I'm going to a Seat dealer today to get some costs - brand new vs 2/3 yrs old, finance options etc.

Quite daunting really. Have never purchased new before - feel like I'm walking into the snake pit.
  • Most dealers will send it straight to auction or to a dealer down the food chain. I don't think they will be too fussed but you won't get a lot.

  • Unless you are driving down deserted backwaters every day or have critical journeys to make I'd just join a recovery service and run it ino the ground, then think about scrapping/part exing it.If you are saving to get married do you really want to saddle yourself with finance on a new/nearly new car?

WHY are you spending thousands now to maybe save a few pounds on a problem that might never happen?

Yes, the problem will get gradually worse, but its time enough starting to think about changing it when its impacting the driving of the car.

No matter what smoke and mirrors a dealership uses today or any day, a 2001 Megane is worth maybe £500 tops to them (and they will trade it on) and a 2001 Megane thats maybe pinking a bit is worth probably £400 if they spot it or £500 if they dont.

Emma please, you will probably get a better deal by leaving the old megane out of the equation and talking cash, it still works for cheaper trade deals.

The old car you are left with will be good scrap value or runner or runner or spares;););)

Hi there, thanks for your reply.

I need a car for work, I'm out on home visits regularly.

I don't really want to sign up for finance but I don't see what choice I've got. I need a reliable car and it seems my Megane is not exactly that :(

The engineer stated that oil is getting into cylinder 1 and will 'end up needing a new engine' therefore B.E.R.

I'm guessing this is more than a few pounds?
