looking around for a new laptop... come across "asus" which i've heard of but know nothing .
In simple terms .. is it a " decent / reliable / good value " brand .. comparable with the normal big brands .. dell. tosh .. hp etc
thanks

The word "cheap" comes to mind, you get what you pay for and Asus doesn't have renowned quality like Dell or HP, especially the "Eee" PC!!
I wouldn't recommend buying one of these but maybe someone can prove me wrong!0 -

Dell and HP laptops use components made by Asus, as well as Apple.0 -

HP are well known for their cheap, poor quality laptops. Not sure why you think otherwise.Internet earnings:

Arguably the highest quality and best motherboards and graphics cards you can get.
Just the mobo and quad SLI cards alone in this set up will set you back the best part of 2 grand.
Their laptops are competitively priced but just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean Asus is a 'cheap' low quality brand.

I've used alot of ASUS components in my expensive / custom home built desktops over the years and at the higher end they make some very very good quality kit. If they can carry even a fraction of that into their laptops (given the lower price point they aim for) they'll be doing well compared to the run of the mill ones. Overall I've always regarded them as 'slightly above average' laptop build quality.0

The established manufacturers have high-end and budget model laptops.
I've always considered Asus to be at the budget end.0 -

I agree , find a model then look for complaints etc about that one
ASUS plus point , most new models have a plug in power jack , makes replacing much easier as no soldering required
EDIT: realised its ACER's not ASUS with the plug in jacksEx forum ambassador

Have to agree they are rubbish. I have bought many laptops in the past, generally I go for IBM Thinkpads but wanted something smaller. I really dont like my Eee. When I use it I plug in a screen and mouse as otherwise it becomes quite frustrating to use otherwise0
