Well it doesn't mean much, apart from telling us that the memory foam is only 4cm deep. Ideally it should be 5cm, but it's only 1cm out.

What it doesn't tell us is the density of the memory foam.

This looks to be the same mattress (though the memory foam layer is now only 3cm apparently!) and lists the density as 65 kg/m3.

Ideally the cheapest but good quality :) Not too firm. Budget wise.. up to £160

Sorry to be blunt, but you won't get a decent quality double memory foam mattress for your budget. You would be better off going for a top of the range open coil sprung mattress.

£160 isn't going to go far for a memory foam double mattress I don't think. With 2 pillows and 20% off the sleep design mattress from TJ Hughes looks like the best value. Particularly if you can get the 25cm model for the price of the 20cm one :)

Never buy a memory foam mattress without knowing the density of the memory foam.

There are two very important things to take into account with memory foam mattresses.

    1) The depth and density of the memory foam.

    2) The spring/foam layer under the memory foam. Most people ignore this thinking that only the memory foam is important. However the mattress must have a good base layer to give support.

Usually with cheap memory foam mattresses they contain low density memory foam, and/or very poor quality reflex foam. Even with good quality reflex foam it will develop a dip over time. With low quality reflex foam this will happen far quicker as the foam starts to break down. This is why I don't like reflex foam.
  • Tim - are you able to advise if the Healthbeds Memory Med 1400 mattress is any good? (can't post links as I'm only a newbie!)

I know its a non-turn which you don't recommend however I'm willing to overlook this if the rest of the spec is good for the price.

    Thanks

It was a Which? Best Buy in 2006 and 2008 so I think it's safe to say that it's a decent product.

As far as non turn mattresses go it is a good one. But like you say I don't like non turn mattresses.
  • We bought the sleep design double memory foam matresses from TJ HUGHES when they were on offer with 20% off thought it was a good deal at the time, but its like sleeping on a door, worst thing i have ever bought, it has mad my back and side pain worse and i have now taken to sleeping down stairs as its more comfortable and im only 34, we thought a memory foam would help the severe nerve damage i a have in one side of my body, on the box it shows a hand print been left in the matresses, it dont leave one of those in the sleep design ones, im waiting for a rep from tj hughes to come out to look at the matresses, but after reading posts from TIM, i will be replacing it with pocket sprung/memory foam thanks tim, and fingers crossed tj hughes will replaces my matresses (ps trading standards state that because it is less than 6 months old it is down to the shop to prove to me that its not faulty not the other way round,:T

I thought i was going mad,i couldn't find this thread before from my past threads, thought i'd imagined it lol

The mattress i have now is some 200 pound cheap job from Dreams, from another bed thread i read that pocket sprung ones are ok.
