in Cutting tax
Are you also having a nervous breakdown today? Worst few days of the year...
we have 27 tax returns to do still - ALL FROM PEOPLE WHO ONLY GOT THEIR STUFF TO US THIS WEEK AND SEEM TO THINK THEY SHOULD GO TO THE FRONT OF THE QUEUE! Two sets received today, believe it or not. And they will be p***d off and blame us if they miss the deadline, moan about their bills, and don't appreciate it even if we bust a gut and work all evening, all weekend to help them.
I hate this week every year.

My word , they must be disorganised !
Would it not benefit you to tell clients that the deadline for having all their bits and pieces to you if they want their tax returns done will be "X" date (some date a week or two before the deadline) ?
Would make your job simpler .The loopy one has gone :j0 -
oh my word, I am WITH you!
I hate this month, let alone the last few days
We actually finished ours at 4am this morning .... same as you... people bringing stuff in late and expecting it to be done even though we sent out final reminders in November!
Well, I THOUGHT we had finished, until I had 3 calls and 2 emails today from "New" clients who are begging us to help. Now trying to work out WHY exactly I said, "Oh go on then" and what time I will finish on Monday.
We have a few clients that we see regularly, all year, and yet they are still late bringing us stuff. They actually must really believe they are our only client. These people arrive with the standard line of "Its all done, its all in there (Pointing to large black bags) so it should be straightforward". Sad that not one client really appreciates / understands what we go through to turn that black bag into a set of accounts and tax return. I find that the later they are, the worse the records are as well.
Ah well, SO glad we can rant together, going to get off here now and work out some Capital allowances for one already done that has just informed me that he bought a vehicle last year (out of his own money of course) so now I have to revisit everything.
Joy. Good luck for 31st x0 -

Oh you are SO right! If anyone ever works out HOW to make the Clients do this, I will happily do your tax returns and accounts for free, forever and ever amen x:j0 -

Don't worry, we don't do violence.
We do, however, tend to add a bit to the bill if you are REALLY late and we stay up all night sorting it.
Just as painfull....:rotfl:
only kidding, we actually still charge the same whethere I lose beauty sleep or not0 -
would you believe that we contact everyone in Aug, remind in Sept, start calling from Oct, issue a deadline warning end Nov, and spend all dec/jan chasing up the many stragglers.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

I'm with you, working for HMRC in the SA dept is truly hideous!0

Personally I think it has got slightly better in the past few years, at least since they brought in the paper filing deadline as 31 October.
Because there is a bit of a fuss made in October, and a few adds on tv, I find it gets a lot of people to bring their stuff in "early".
There are always the same old clients that will never change and leave everything to the last minute, no matter how hard you try to tell them.0 -
Somebody phoned me yesterday at 8am - I've been trying to contact him for about a month, and since his mobile was always off thought he had dropped off the planet! (Turned out it was H1N1...) But his return's now drafted for approval tomorrow am... One more to see tomorrow as well, again for approval.
But by far the worst was a guy who phoned me a few years ago at 9.30pm on the 30th - and told me "my books are a bit of a mess!" Since he phoned my mobile, I pretended I was on holiday....0 -

Do as HMRC do ........ and add a Surcharge! But make it 28 days in front of the deadline - rather than after.
As you've all been moaning the same way ever since 1997 ..... clearly your MO isn't working! Do something different, as you won't change behaviour by doing things the same way. Here endeth ..If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
