Freezer won't work in Garage

  • I've got a freezer in the garage - it's a Bosch. It works fine, even during the really cold recent weather when it got below -5 inside the garage!

Do you know the weight of a mol of carbon atoms? Alas just because you don't know something doesn't mean it isn't relatively well known. Just a silly example to prove a point. You could find out the carbon weight answer with a little research, likewise the f/f issue!

I would've went down the "but your honour, i didn't KNOW it was bad to hit someone in the face with a baseball bat until you just told me" route.

    ignorance is not an excuse.

But, if you're not aware of the problem, you wouldn't instinctively think - "I wonder what the ambient temperature should be in order for this fridge freezer to operate correctly"?

Freezers will not suffer the same problem for a very simple reason! A freezer is going to be set up to ensure temperatures remain below zero - it may well shut down if ambient temperatures around it fall too low, but as by definition that will have to be some way below zero, you will never know about it because the food will remain frozen at the ambient temperatures. I agree people have long kept chest freezers etc in the garage especially for long term storage of less frequently accessed items. Its less obvious that a fridge would be used in that way so its not unreasonable for manufacturers to assume that most people will keep their fridge (and any attached freezer) somewhere where they can easily access the short term stored fresh food normally kept in fridge.

What happens with a fridge freezer is that at say 1C to 4C, the fridge thermostat is saying its cold enough, don't need the refrigeration system working so it shuts down. That is fine for the fridge contents but because its above freezing around it, over time the frozen stuff will thaw out. You'll notice that normally a fridge has an adjustable temperature setting but many freezer parts of the same unit are either on or off. This is why you need a dual thermostat so that the fridge can shut down but the freezer knows to keep working.

I absolutely agree, but doing a search online for "good fridge freezer for my garage" may have indicated something useful. It's been on various consumer shows over the years. But ignorance is not usually a strong comeback in court :-(

Yes - that would make more sense - I see what you mean now.

However, the OP stated "..where his previous one had been for several years" - so more an assumption that a new one would continue to work in the same way ( is that still ignorance ? :o )

Would many people bother heating a garage that they might only be in for a few minutes a day ? I know I wouldn't (unless I had a cheap fridge-freezer in it :))

Any freezer will work well in a garage.

Any fridge will work well in a garage.

The problem only arises with some/most fridge-freezers.
