Redundant today

Options
And so the day has arrived. This evening I will tidy my desk for the last time, having received word of my redundancy last week. To be honest, I'll not miss it that much - it has been slow for awhile, and I knew it was coming at some stage, and had been looking around for another job, but I guess I just hoped I would get something sorted myself and leave of my own accord. :(

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my days, having had a job of some sort since I was 16. Have looked online and in the papers but there's nothing there that is suitable.

Thankfully, I opened a new savings account last year and have a good bit put away in it, but I really don't want to dip into my savings too much.

I have only really told my partner and my immediate family, my best friends do not know and to be honest I'm mortified at having to tell them - I was always the one with the good job and the comfortable lifestyle who helped them out with money anytime they needed it, I know they would do the same for me, but I don't want to go down that route - hate owing anyone even a small amount.

Anyway, this is just a shout out to anyone else who is finishing off today or this week or soon, need to know if they have got sorted out with a new job....it would give me some hope that I might too!!

I know exactly how you feel! In March I'll be leaving the best job I've ever had, going from a mid-£30kpa wage to, potentially, £65 a week on JSA and probably a lower paid job at some point.

Look on the bright side though, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, and being made redundant could open up doors to bigger and better things. It's just hard to keep thinking positive staring redundancy in the face.

    Good luck to you!
  • My husband gets made redundant as of today, and I'm not working at the moment either. Also because our house comes with the job we have precisely two weeks to find somewhere else to live, with no money coming in. We have a small amount of savings but wont last us long. He's been to 7 interviews since finding out at the start of the month, no job offers yet but will hear about 2 of the jobs today or tomorrow. Amazingly am still staying positive - its true what doesnt kill you makes you stronger!

I also was a bit worried about how to fill my time after the novelty of the first few weeks, which had been like being on holiday. Got my redundancy in perspective fairly quickly, wouldn't lose my home, wouldn't starve and no-one had died!

Filled my time with a bit of office voluntary work (look on the do-it website for your area/interest), helped keep me out of mischief and motivated.

Attended a fortnightly 'job club' which runs in our area - brilliant help with CV's, interview skills, job search skills. You name it & they tried to offer it, all sorts of freebie training and I took advantage of all of it. Helped to meet others in the same boat too, very supportive of each other & I made some new friends.

There was other free training of a similar nature where I live and I utilised it ALL (NextStep also gave my CV the once over and suggested some more helpful improvements).

I claimed contribution based Job Seekers Allowance (which I hadn't realised I'd qualify for), 'signing on' fortnightly was a bit tiresome but they do have info on courses/training so it was useful to be pointed in the right direction. One training provider or support group sort of lead to another and another. I felt that it would be wise to take full advantage of as much as possible.

Took me 5 months to get another job, though I didn't apply for anything and everything - probably sent out approx 10 -12 proper applications (and probably half a dozen more which the job centre insisted on for jobs I didn't want, so I just send bog stand basic apps/cv to those with precious little chance/intention of getting short listed). From my own vacancy choices I got a total of 7 interview invitations, failed the first 5 (I was an airhead with precious little interview technique). Got job 6 so cancelled interview 7.

You must view finding a job as a job in itself. Get as much training in as you can (free stuff anyway) to help you successfully land something.

    Good luck.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
  • Tell your friends, they may even know of a job opportunity. If they really are your friends they won't be bothered by your current circumstances. i have found networking is the best way to actually find work.

    Sorry about your job.

I was made redundant in May 2010 and it finally pushed me into going to Uni, at the grand old age of 27.

It may open up doors that you never knew existed. I hope you find something else quickly.

I went bankrupt 3 years ago, so lucky for me I had no debts to service.

I still pay £550 a month in rent and bills.

I have no spare money really, but everything seemed to be right to get to Uni :)

Plus, I'm only in for 9 hrs a week! So it's hardly full time :o getting a job soon I hope.

  • I am so sorry to hear of your situation. My job is under review and I am very worried. I know how you feel about mortgages, if only I didnt have one to pay I am sure I would be a lot less stressed.

  • I'd echo the voluntary work suggestion, my job finished in November although my notice period is only just finishing.

I started doing some voluntary work at the start of January and it's been fab, it's really raised my self confidence (had a tough time with a boss previously), they have been so glad to have my help. It is also opening doors that may well turn into paid jobs or at least work experience to keep my professional skills up to date which is a huge concern of mine.

Try to remain positive, difficult I know, I go through phases of feeling that it will all be OK in the end and feeling like my life is over and it's the end of the world. Try to be kind to yourself over the next couple of weeks, give yourself some time off but really do consider voluntary work x
