  • I love talking hols :) sorry to hijack the thread, all.

OMG please give me some guidance advice! We are going to Marrakesh for 10 days. Went through holiday-rentals.co.uk and accom was £300 for an appartment and flight we got in the Ryanair sales so my cost for 10 day holiday was £230

    Smashing deal!

so what I want to know is:
    · recommendations of places to go, visit we are defiantely up for travelling around and happily getting over b&b/hostel if we venture far - can't imagine it will cost alot
I got out of Marrakech as quick as I could and went to the other imperial cities (Meknes, Fez) then went down the coast to El Jadida and Essouera. It was cheap as chips, I never spent more than about £10 on accommodation and food can be super cheap, the lonely planet had quite good suggestions.

I didn’t book anything in advance and just went with the flow. I loved going into the imperial cities (especially Fez) and just getting lost in the medina for hours. Obviously dress modestly (long sleeves and trousers). Public transport is very good, and you will be treated very well as a lady (for example, in packed shared taxis they will put a Moroccan woman next to you so you don’t feel smashed against a strange man!)

It depends on the sort of holiday you want – if you want beach and chill out, head straight to Essouera. If you want history, go to Meknez and visit the roman ruins nearby, which are one of the most beautiful places I’ve been in my life, and I had them entirely to myself!! The cities can have loads of hassle (especially Marrakech) which can be tiring but isn’t threatening or anything, a firm and polite no and a bit of banter will get you far. If you haven’t been out of Europe before, it can be a bit intimidating but its not worse than SE Asia if you’ve been there.
    · how much do you think we need for spending money - alot or not? (I have less than I had hoped cos of my car )
Using only public transport and staying in very cheap hotels and eating at local spots, I think I only spent £100 or so, not including souvenirs, over 10 days. Souvenirs are much cheaper in Essouera than Marrakech. I am wearing some of the stunning silver I got in Fez for a song as we speak!
    · best to change currency here or there?
If you can, order in advance and pick it up at the airport. Most of the travel money companies let you do this.
    · I want to treat oh to the morrocco by air (balloon) as its his 30th but not sure what would be reasonable there to haggle down to
No idea on this one, sorry!
    thanks

Oh Im so jealous! I sort of wish you were going alone as its so much easier to meet people that way. Travelling alone (obviously with my head about me, I’ve done this a lot in the past) I met so many wonderful Moroccans on the trains and busses who took fantastic care of me – walking me around town, giving me advice on where to go, even buying me tea or lunch! Once you get off the tourist track (I recommend El Jadida) people are curious and wonderfully hospitable. If you speak a bit of French, all the better.

If your OH is outdoorsy, how about going into the desert or the Atlas Mountains as a treat instead of the hot air balloon?

  • Morning all :)

I'm pining for Morocco now. Haven't been for years, but always loved it.

    So, my list:

    - check banking (this is still a biggie for me, as I avoided ever looking at banking until a couple of weeks ago)
    - check surveys
    - do comps
    - packed lunches for all, leftovers for me
    - no tumble dryer use - laundry on airer
    - dinner from menu, already in slow cooker
    - heating turned down low for the day
    - continue cleaning for weekend (tackled Giant Sock Mountain yesterday, and conquered it)
    - set up savings account for car expenses
    - change all bedlinen (quite tempted to hang it outside today, actually - it won't dry completely, but it's a lovely bright day, so it will get some way there)

Hope everyone has a good Friday :D

Afternoon everyone, hope you are all having a good and money saving friday.

Yesterday's predicted NSD didnt materialise. I met an old work colleague for coffee and spent £4.40. I also had to get milk on the way home again. The kids seem to be going through it much quicker than normal this week. So I'm currently up to £14.89 spend for the week against the £15 I'd allowed myself. Only problem is that another old workmate has leaving drinks tonight before she flies to Australia for a year, and it would be rude of me not to pop along for at least one, so I'll probably overspend for the week, but only just.

I found some crisps in my locker at work that passed their sell by date on 15 Jan, cos I havent eaten any in January. Dont know whether that counts as money saving or not. I'll take them home for the kids and if they arent too soft then its money saving cos I hadn't already eaten them and bought some more, if they are no good, it's probably money wasted for buying them in the first place.

    Today I have
    Checked online banking
Made a payment towards a credit card bill :)
Arranged for money to transfer between my savings account and my current account in readiness for bills going out next week
Not smoked (day 31 without cigarettes)
    Made lunch for work
Free coffee on train and at work
    Charged phone on train
Given leftover salad stuffs (carrot tops, cucumber ends, celery leaves etc) to next door neighbour for her rabbit - not moneysaving for me, but it hopefully is for her
Dinner is vegetable casserole to use up leftover veg that will otherwise go off
Debt free since December 2015. It can be done

  • Hiya everyone and thanks to moneypenny for starting us off :)

It's Friday!!! :j:T:j Funny how the thought of a couple of days off work can make you so happy :D

    My list for today: -
    • charging phone at work
    • breakfast, lunch and snacks to work
    • tea per meal planner
    • check on-line banking and update ss
    • check surveys
    • buy washing capsules from savers (they sell persil non-bio there which is meant to do 10 washes, 2 capsules per wash but I use 1 capsule and it does 20 washes... in the supermarket persil have changed their capsules so it's 1 capsule per wash so double the price really!!)
    • hm bread tonight
That's it for me, have a great Friday everyone :) x

uncle has come to fix my roof - he did a bit of shpping around and managed to get most of what he needed for nothing, total cost i owe him £1!:money:, should have cost £30+ or £150+ for a professional to do so not a bad saving me thinks
