Buying car on eBay - Credit Card via Paypal?

TUS
TUS Posts: 692 Forumite
Am looking at buying a car via an eBay auction. It is local to me, and I am planning on going to check the car in person before bidding and have a reasonable idea what to be looking for.

My question is more about payment method. The seller accepts Paypal or Cash. I would like to pay by Credit Card as I currently have 0% on purchases and have raised about 80% of the funds. My plan is to pay by credit card, clear the 80% straight away from my savings and clear the remaining 20% next month when I next get paid.

What kind of protection do I have from Paypal and my card company (Halifax/BOS) if anything bad happens? Is it a bad idea to do it this way?

Who in their right mind would take PayPal as a form of payment when selling a car. The seller probably has forgot to take PayPal off when he/she listed the car.

It is a private sale so you will have very limited comeback (not impossible) do all your necessary checks before buying (eg HPI, AA).

Are you sure he will accept PayPal? If I was selling a car on EBay I wouldn't (regardless of what EBay say)

If the seller accepts paypal for a car, then snatch his hand off!

The seller has no protection at all in car sales, but the buyer does get the usual paypal protection. Read up on this.

Couldn't agree more:T. I used to think that paying cash on pick up was the sensible thing to do, and got bit once. My tactic know even if I'm picking up is (if offered) to pay by paypal imediately the auction ends so the seller does not have time to request cash payment :money:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

If you are looking for protection then it sounds as though you would be better off buying from a dealer. Generally if you buy privately, including eBay private ads, then the car is sold as seen and once you pay for it you are responsible for all the current and future faults. You may be able to get refunded by a quirk of Paypal I suppose by claiming the goods were 'not as described' but this is not a very honourable thing to do if you have driven away satisfied at the point of sale.

    Hardly the point!

You are getting a free "warranty" if you use paypal to pay for it!

"Honour" doesn't come into it. It's a business transaction!

Yep it is business and between private individuals the sale is complete when the buyer pays and drives away.

A subsequent PP charge back because something on the car had gone wrong is much the same as stopping a cheque, fine if you have legal grounds, tantamount to theft if you don’t.

Of course business should be conducted in an honourable manner ! What a disgusting viewpoint you have !

You entitled to your opinion, but expressing it personally like this is bound to cause unnecessary unpleasantness on the forum.

The OP has asked for advice.

The vendor has offered (at his expense) PP as a means of paying (for whatever reason).

It is by far the best way (and moneysaving too) for the OP to buy a car off ebay.

You brought up the subject of "honour", but it is irrelevant to making this moneysaving decision!

There you go again ! I can't believe it! You need to seriously step back and think about what is important in life. It is certainly NOT saving money at the expense of honour !
