Carphone Warehouse problems - Credit check with no contract?

Good evening people!
Today I thought I'd treat myself to a new phone, the Google Nexus S. The only problem is, the Carphone Warehouse is the only place that sells them and I am having issues
Basically, I placed the order online for one, SIM free, unlocked blah blah no contract, not even pay as you go... Then I get an email sayin that they couldn't process the order.
I gave them a call, and a woman said I failed a credit check! I don't understand why they would credit check me if I wasn't asking for credit (no contract, using my own card).. She said it's their policy to credit check all customers.. can they do this & should they refuse me?
I know for a fact I have a good credit rating.
I would just go into the shop, but I live in the Channel Islands and we don't have a Carphone Warehouse (I did check and they do deliver here)
Anyone had anything similar

Yeah I don't think it's right... I'm gonna ring them again tomorrow to find out what they're on about.
Cheers but just checked Play.. they don't have the Nexus S, they only have the Nexus One.. I think Carphone Warehous have exclusivity for them at the moment!0 -
Sounds rubbish! Cant understand why they would credit check you for making a non-contract payment. Could it be the fact you are asking for it be delivered to the Channel Island and not the main land? and they did a credit search as proof you live at the address???? Ask them would they credit check you if you bought a battery from them!!
Try play.com as suggested i got sim-free unlocked phone - cheaper than any high street retailer!0 -
I guess it could be to check proof of address, but even still when I checked out they had an option for Channel Islands (which they then add £35 for delivery!) and in their T&C's it says something like "Delivery to the Channel Islands may take longer"...
Really strange. If I can't solve it I'll get someone to go into the shop and send one over for me, or wait til I'm next in the mainland.

Really expensive on there!
I phoned Carphone Warehouse again today and they said it is an internal security check that I failed, and I would have to go into the store to confim my identity, which of course I can't do.
I still don't get how they can refuse to sell me something that I am trying to buy on my own credit & debit cards!! I have never had this issue with any other company in the past...
Anyway, thanks for all your help and suggestions.0 -
For whatever reason they don't seem to want you as a customer.
And there's nothing you can do about that.0 -
No one can do a credit check without your authorisation! I'd check your credit profile to see if they did search, make sure you double check what you agreed to - maybe you checked their stupidly overpriced insurance policy?0

They credit checked me for a £15 payg phone (there is a topic about it here). They claimed it was just the wrong e-mail that was sent out, but that seems unlikely given that it was an automated e-mail!
Thanks to this error I had to by a more expensive product as it then sold out.0
