Just wondered if it is possible.....

for me when I am downstairs to connect to my desktop upstairs as that one is where the printer is connected so I can print letters.

The reason I ask is I am disabled and sometimes am unable to get upstairs to do the work. I had to have sky help with the router and they connected to my computer and sorted things out and he said he was able to see everything on my computer. this is where I got this idea from and if I could connect the two this way it would be so much easier as wife is ok at sending e-mails but not much else on computers so even getting her to print the letters off a memory stick is an ordeal in itself.

I thank you for your help

I can tell you that, yes, it is possible - the upstairs computer would need to be switched on, as well as the printer, when you want to print. The printer would need to be "shared" on that computer to be seen by other computers on your wifi network.

However, as to the actual technical method of doing it, I shall defer to the whizzkids on here to advise you! I managed it for our network but doubt I could explain how I did it :rotfl:

What OS are the computers running.
Are the two computers networked together (either using a wireless/wired router or a very long cable)
  • Laptop is running on Vista and desktop is Windows 7

I should have asked the Techie when I had him how he did it because I just sat here seeing what he was doing on my laptop.

  • ANother question is the printer network capable or is it just usb?
If the printer has Ethernet port life is more simple, if USb then you will just need to enable File and Printer Sharing on the upstairs box.

It is a Kodak all in one and connected with USB. Also I have saved almost all files on desktop so they are all in one place and being able to see them would be a help.

  • OK on the desktop (I realise you may be downstairs at the mo) you need to go into control panel / network and sharing centre. Advanced sharing settings / Home Turn File and printer sharing. Do the same on the laptop . On the Desktop right click on the printer select sharing, share this device. From the laptop control panel / devices and printers. Add printer, on the network, it should see the Kodok on the desktop, et voila that should be it. Let us know if you have problems.

  • You could get a usb printer server and connect your printer to that, saves having to have both computers on. I have a network drive that has a print server built in which would be handy if I hadn't already got a wireless printer.
Nothing to see here, move along.
  • As I say it is not just to print it is to access the files saved on the desktop.
