  • Hi

When I went we visited bloomingdales and macey's and for foreign visitors you can go to the customer service desk and show them your passport, they will then give you a ticket which allows you to buy either your goods tax free or at a good discount. I can't remember which now!

    Have a wonderful time!

hi thanks for all your help. making notes as i read. with the apple bit i have been told to buy from a eletrical store in the states like our dixons because its a bit cheaper than apple is this tru?

you are probably only going to save around $10 with vouchers from magazines that you may find in your hotel.

check out b&h downtown http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ for a rough price guide.

remember if any of you are a student or at uni then you will get discount on any apple computer, from the apple store.you may have to take your student id or proof that you are on a course or uni letter.
  • we went to woodbury common, the bus tickets are $35 dollars each!!! and like bicester village, i never bought a thing! nice ride out to NYC though into the land of wooden houses and american flags. i liked the journet more.

plenty of big shops there, 3-4 times the size of bicester village.
  • train alternative for woodbury common ...note times of trains make planning essential

to be honest i've driven or had local friends drive me there...my mind deserts me but there's other shops close by tj maxx etc but i think it may not be practical to walk to them from woodbury common as it's a very short journey by car but probably hazardous for walking.

I went to Woodbury Common yesterday and it was absolutely fantastic! If you are not disciplined you could spend thousands there. I spent about $1200 but if I'd bought the same things in the UK I would have spent at least twice that. The Gucci store seemed good. I bought a summer 2006 bag which had been marked down from $750 to about $490. Beware of tax though. That brought my bag to over $500. Tod's is also good. They had some awesome Hogan boots marked down from over $300 to about $200.

Woodbury Common is like a higher end McArthur Glen. They have Gucci, Fendi, Dior, Guess, Tod's, Versace, Ferragamo and the like. They also have the lower end designer stores like Gap, Barney's, Levi's etc. Lots of great underwear shops if your girlfriend is into that.

Like I said, I loved it, loved it.
The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.
  • To save on the bus ride to Woodbury Common, try Jersey Gardens instead. It's only half an hour's trip (rather than an hour for Woodbury I think). Buses go from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd St & 8th Ave) and cost about $10 return. It was certainly big enough to get all shopped out! No sales tax on clothes or shoes in NJ.

When you arrive, go to the information desk and show your passport, and they'll give you a book of discount vouchers (eg an extra 20% off at Gap) for free. This usually costs $5 but is free to foreigners, but you have to show proof.
  • Oh yes, and the sales in Bloomingdales and Macy's are excellent in January. As SADE613, remember to go along to customer services and pick up a discount card before you start shopping.

Also remember to take warm clothes (or at least plan on buying a coat out there) as it can get unbelieveably cold in January.

I don't think I'd recommend the jump on jump off tour bus. For $7 you can buy a day fun pass from machines in subway stations for unlimited subway and bus travel - it's really easy to find your way about on Manhattan because of the grid system and numbered streets/avenues and people are incredibly helpful if you do need assistance.
