It is advisable to let your bank/credit card company know when you are going away - it reduces the risk of them blocking your card when away.

Barclays let you do this via online banking... not sure if there is a similar option on Santander internet banking?

Don't forget Santander will be charging overdraft useage fees from March. Good luck with them.

I have a Santander debit card, I won't get ANY charges for using it in a Santander machine in Spain, so thanks for trying to help with the other suggestions, but I specifically need to know if there is a) a way to email them or b) a better number to call?

It doesn't matter how you contact them, be it via an 08 or an 01 telephone number, email, or mail, they're a bunch of incompetent, !!!!!! crooks who couldn't offer useful advice or action a request if they're lives depended on it.

We aren't being sarcastic or flippant, they are simply a shambles.

OP - you're making a VERY BAD MOVE from HSBC to Santander. One of the best high street banks to undoubtedly THE WORST. Don't do it!

No, unfortunately Santander don't do an online contact system! Surprising & annoying.
Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!

sorry, but anyone who has banked with Santander for more than a week would not be surprised. I was previously with both Abbey and A&L, both went to pot after being taken over by Santander.

And get used to feeling annoyed....its going to be happening a lot

Sorry, I know this sounds flippant, but truly, Santander are dire.

  • I guess no bank you know is the best, each have good points and also the bad ones...

But Santander from HSBC... Eh? Eh!

I do wish you the best of luck, you must have a lot of money to spend on phone calls, trips to the bank or have a good writing hand if things go a tad wrong with Santander..

After what everyone puts on here about Santander... And what i hear elsewhere on TV, Press etc... Gosh, i'm just glad I don't even have anything to do with them one bit...

Most people if they can are moving away from them.. And a lot of Happy A&L Customers now with the lovely Santander don't like them one bit...

Being overdrawn over your limit with HSBC...are they on the phone every fifteen minutes? They absolutely hounded me a couple of years ago, I'd tell them the situation and they'd call back about an hour later...somebody else, have to explain again...nearly drove me to insanity.

They will do a credit check before opening a current account for you, wherever you apply for, and depending how long you've been overdrawn for, I wouldn't automatically expect to be approved for an account AND an overdraft.

Also, I don't think HSBC will let you close the account until the balance has been cleared in full, even if you offer to pay in installments, the account will remain open but possibly frozen.
