Best Bank account for someone with a default

Hello all,
I'm In a bit of a pickle, currently I have a default in my name due to charges from the bank of scotland when I was made unemployed
they have now closed my account.
I'm just wondering if there is any banks out there where you dont have to pay monthly fee's that will allow you to set up a bank account even though you have a default.
I currently earn 15k per year and I get it paid into my mothers account but it's getting annoying for obvious reasons.
Anyone recommend a decent account which will provide me with a bank card and stuff ?
Also I'm in the process of trying to reclaim the unfair charges back!
I've just requested the last 16 months worth of bank statements on the account so i can see where all the trouble started, I'm currently paying it off via wescot debt ageny but it's driving me insane because I feel like I'm being robbed but th worst thing of all is the default in my name is going to stay there for a long time and cause me major problems when I come to get a mortgage.
All opinions welcome!
Cheers

you should be able to get a basic bank account - one without an overdraft and you may or may not be able to get a debit card depending on which one you go for.
Try one of the comparison search engines - like moneysupermarket.com and "basic bank accounts"Indecision is the key to flexibility

Hi
You should be able to get a Natwest Step account, you get a Solo card with that one.

Hello :hello:
Can personally reccomend Nationwide (they have a basic account called the flex account), most banks have basic accounts though, including Natwest (as mentioned above by fizzyhelen!), barclays and the cooperative bank amongst others.....

I second the comments made above about the Natwest Step Account. I thoroughly recommend it. Although if you have a Yorkshire Bank or Clydesdale Bank near you then I would recommend them over the Natwest account as with these banks you also get a full blown debit card(Maestro), rather than a Solo with Natwest. They are also very good to deal with too.
But ofc, there are other banks out there that would accept you. If you only have one default you might still stand a good chance of getting a "normal" bank account rather than a basic one, i.e. overdraft, cheque book etc. Try Smile or Halifax if thats what your after, I have heard that they have provided on occassion full current accounts to people with defaults.
Also, was the reason you defaulted originally due to charges? If so, you may also stand a chance at getting the default removed. Let me know and I will direct you to more information.0 -
While re-claiming your charges, you can request removal of the default as part of your claim.
Have a look at www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk.
Good luck!0 -
Yes i would look into getting the default removed. If it was caused by the banks overcharging etc and they have now passed it onto a collection agency you might be able to claim everything back because the charges shouldn't have been made against you in the first place.0

Hey, no problem.
As xxdiddiexx mentioned you can visit either:
https://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk
or
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (MSE must censor this site for some reason) PM me for the other addy.
Both websites have excellent resources, information and forums and will be able to help you through the process needed to try and remove the default and claim back your charges.
If you post on either of the forums on those sites, then some experts will be able to guide you through the process.0 -

Thanks for this, I have a Natwest step account, and they have been fairly good but if a DD fails more than once they charge you and cancel the DD without notifying you! they then refuse to re-instate the DD for a few months. I have just started the process of reclaiming bank charges with them, so I have applied to Smile today,so far they have been excellent! Thanks again0 -
Just applied for an cahoot current account online and was conditionally accepted, now on 15k a year as a web developer but rising up to 18 soon and in the process of having all my charges claimed back. cut up all credit cards and I'm on the road to recovery !
or so i Hope
Thanks alot allSmile and be happy0
