i spend a lot of my time doing right what PCWorld has done wrong to people's computers! the more bad press they get, the more work I get!
This "techguys" dixons thingy charge so much for just doing simple things!

Then again, that must be a hideous job.

Finding every PC has a unique selection of oddities regarding installed drivers, mangled account permissions, dodgy hard disks, warez installs etc. plus the inevitable "as you're here, can you just...." Request Of Doom.

A few years ago my MIL bought a PC there with an extended warrenty (taking advice from my stupid BIL)well into the warrenty she said it was playing up and took it back to get checked over..When she got it back she phoned me up to come over and 'fix' it..I dont know if they wiped the hard drive or fitted a new one but that was it...they didn't install the operating system, apparently she was told that she should have a disk and have to do it herself..She is in her 60's and only bought the PC to help her daughter as she was at uni...
Shocking service considering she paid a fortune for the 'warrenty'.

I see Dixons are planning a new service, the TechGuys, aiming at 16,000 home visits a week.

Then again, as Dixons also owns PC World, I won't be calling the TechGuys until they have a much better reputation than the numpties in the stores.

Most of the recruits for this idea were unskilled workers from Mastercare when they had their last round of redundancies. Most were warehouse or van drivers all put on a 'intensive' 3 week course to become engineers. Wouldn't let them near my new plasma (if I had or could afford one of course!)

I had a quick look at the site and was quite surprised to see an attractive young blonde woman with the invitation to 'Meet a TechGuy". Turns out she's the Norwegian Head of Marketing, not a TechGuy at all!
  • judging by that site, the pay (13-16k) is just a bit over the minimum wage, if you pay peanuts, you get .....
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

I see the "faults" that which put on the PC, took me 5 seconds to work out what they had done !!!!

first one was "delete a file that is required as the Pc first boots up"...probably NTLDR,NTDETECT or boot.ini....

2nd one was loosening a hard disk cable....I ALWAYS go round and reseat everything before I start !!

and I'm not a "tech support" guy

5 minutes to fix either/both of those
