Grrr bit of a rant about my elderly cat

my elderly cat will be 20 in may - he's a persian so for those that dont know persians - he has a flat face and his nose is small. anyway his health has not been so good this past year, but nothing to warrant putting him to sleep
some days he walks a little stiffly, his teeth are poor, he has poor eyesight, he has a constant runny nose and sneezes. (disgusting but the snot sometimes collates on his legs and i have to chop the hair clumps out with scissors)
a couple of months ago he had a full health check with the vet - the advice was that he was well enough with "minor aged issues" and to just care for him until such time as he was unable to manage day to day living. (he was last in the vets on monday this week for booster)

today the cat went into the enclosed garden this afternoon whilst i nipped out for a couple of mins (well 20 mins) the neighbour has been in our garden and whisked said cat off to a different vet, she has reported us to the RSPCA for "neglect" of the cat, saying he is poorly cared for, he can barely walk, he has cat flu, cat Aids etc, i found out because another neighbour came ranting round our house this evening about the "neglect issue"
anyway - i dash it down the vets because said neighbour has said she's having my cat put down this pm because of flu /aids virus. i arrive at the vets to be verbally torn down a strip by neighbour about how i can let my cat get in this state infront of the waiting patients!!
anyway vet calls me in, i explain cat is 20yrs old almost (i have paperwork!) and gave her my appointment card to my vet that i have, so that she can clarify that the cat has been seen and what was the advice given . the "new vet" is now not concerned about cat and believes he is in good condition considering his age it seems my neighbour was concerned about the runny nose and bald patches on legs! however had she knocked at the door and asked i would have told her what the situation is (i mean we do talk -never having had a problem)
anyway - blood tests etc have all come back negative (which i knew cos he was checked 4 months ago) and neighbour walks out of vets in a huff leaving me with a £70 bill for "treatment" which i didnt ask for (well actually i have paid another vet already to run some now completed tests) because of the way she ranted off in the surgery (infront of other people) i have paid the £70 bill - but now my hubby is furious and is about to create merry hell next door but one about this bill - he has also spoken to the vets to get their advice on weather we were responsible for the bill, considering the cat was "locked" in our secure garden with no means of escape on our own property - which means she entered the garden without our permission and took the cat.

OMG - you strangle that neighbour and let me know where to come with a spade, will help you bury her/him......

Really feel for you, would NOT pay any bils myself.

Is the cat microchipped? Why would a vet "treat" a cat that was brought in by one person but belongs to another?

that cat is not microchipped - i cant recall being offered microchip when he was younger, and when he got to 10+ thought he wouldnt last that much longer

neighbour attended the vet saying he was a "stray" however he was within our rear garden (access through our front garden) with 8ft high fencing round and big gate (the bantam chickens cant even get through any gaps) and its like fort knox (really for the chickens benefit - but i kept them locke up today) and the cat even struggles to jump on the sofa

he hasnt really been out of the house for 3 years - but i do try and encourage him wander around the garden when i'm around just for the fresh air if nothing else

Ok - when you got to those vets - why didn't you just take your cat and walk away without going through a "consultation" that you yourself did not request?

My understanding from your post was that the neighbour was in the waiting room with your cat then?

I would have taken the cat, screamed at the neighbour and walk out....

the cat was in the back in the "hospital part" - i had been told that the RSPCA had been called - and at the time i was in panic / embarrassed mode. they wouldnt release the cat to me until i had spoken to the vet, who had no idea how old he was or that i was receiving care (due to the allegations). i had also been told that the cat had had bloods taken and felt i needed to explain that the cat had already been seen by another vet and if that vet would like to speak to the other vet then all would become clear about the original incorrect accusation of failing to get vetinary care.

I think a solicitor's letter informing her that her comments, made in a place where members of the public were in hearing distance, were slanderous and that you intend to sue. Also get the solicitor to mention something about the trespass and removal of your property (is this burglary??) If she were to pay your unnecessary vet bill and cover the cost of the solicitor letter and give you a token (say £500) to compensate for your stress then you'll forgive her and not sue her. At the very least such a letter will make her wet her pants and possibly make her shut her mouth as well.

    Then buy a voodoo doll....

I'm not sure I would have been anywhere near as calm as you were! I would at the very least send her a bill to cover the costs of the unneccessary treatment.

There are lots of other things I would like to do to your neighbour on your behalf, but the forum wouldn't like it!
