Cats are pretty bad for the environment in many ways. They increase fuel consumption and to make them requires certain rare metals that have to be mined and refined, not a very environmentally process. They are also incompatible with the fuel saving "lean burn" technology that many manufacturers were working on in the late 80s, putting an end to that research.

They are only useful if you live somewhere that has a problem with smog, such as London or San Francisco. If your car spends it's life on the motorway then the cat is hurting both the environment and your wallet.

Yeap and quite right so for such a stupid comment.
what you mean it's a good idea to bung up the exhaust pipe and make your car less efficient than to develop cleaner engines?
Nothing to see here, move along.

Yes, it was definitely a cat. Not a dpf.
Cyclonebri, your probably onto something there, have been keeping revs very low lately. Also go fast through puddles and over speed bumps, google says this is not good news for cat's!
Anyway I'm predicting it's going to be between 20-30 more efficient on the diesel front.
Agree very much with Lum's sentiments, no need to mine precious resources and manufacture them into a cat (think of all that wasted effort/carbon/eco-nonsense), only to suffer on the MPG front. I am now officially saving the world! Will let you know final milage reading on this tank.

    20-30% sorry
