Removed catalytic converter
Interesting
Just had my catalytic converter block up for the second time in 6 months. Obviously there is an underlying cause to this ie faulty injector. The vehicle is doing average mileage to the gallon though. As far as I can see the only side effect of this underlying problem was the cat blocking up. At £120 a pop, fitted. This time I just had a section of pipe placed where the cat was. Half the price and wont block up again!
Diesel so my understanding is no need to have cat for MOT. Am I right in also assuming that only a smog test is performed on a diesel?
Anyway, I seem to be getting amazing mileage from a tank now. Whereas before at a quarter of a tank i'd have done 125 miles, I have now done 200! Potentially I have only been getting 60% of all previous diesel (not literally) if you get my drift, I re-set the clock every time I fill so I wont truly know until I fill up again, but happy days so far...
Anyone else had the same experience?
Ps, no obvious increase in performance ie speed or acceleration.

Its not a cat its a diesel particulate filter which removes soot from the exhaust system. It does look like a cat from the outside. Although its not illegal to remove it you might fail your MOT without it on emissions tests.0

Probably the blockage up the exhaust had something to do with it, cats are a pretty stupid idea all round really especially performance wise. I bet I'm about to get slated for that comment.Nothing to see here, move along.0

My diesel mondeo has a CAT not a DPF.
MOT for UK diesels are smoke test only so no CAT needed currently. For it to have failed so soon i would put down to a quality issue rather than a fault.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I'm surprised that car makers fit DPFs in the UK, they are not required and cost a fortune to fit. Explains why Mercedes Benz do not fit them.Never Knowingly Understood.

OP, it could actually be your driving style that's causing the issue. Most of these particulate filters have some sort of regeneration programme to keep them clear, but I'm pretty sure not all do.
With fuel at the price it is, it is easy to overdue it on the economy front, ie, driving a little too gently. Give it a good ragging when fully warmed up once per week, you'll be amazed at the amount of stuff that removes;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
If the DPF needs a regeneration it should light up on the dash.
A good bit of right-foot regeneration would help:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. My old man is a MOT mechanic, he says if a car fails a MOT on emissions they give it some heavy right boot and it sometimes clears the system...0

They fit DPFs because you pretty much need one to pass EuroIV or whatever the current version of the standard is.
They're not necessary to pass a UK MOT, so removing it is purely a moral decision on your part.
FWIW I've removed the cat on my old petrol car as it doesn't need to pass a cat test at the MOT. Doing so means it contributes more to smog but less to CO2 due to the fuel efficiency gains (approx 2mpg). As I do not drive it in cities I am comfortable with this trade off.
Passed it's MOT just fine on Monday. 0.35% Carbon monoxide and 28ppm hydrocarbons. With the cat it got something more like 0.03% carbon monoxide and 58ppm hydrocarbons.0 -
