Bank of America - scam???

in Credit cards
Just had an official looking letter saying I still owed them £21.75. I don't have a Bank of America credit card so phoned the helpline number they quoted. She asked what my account number was (it was on the letter) and my mother's maiden name (which I gave them) then asked what the credit limit was on the account. I said I didn't have an account so couldn't tell her the credit limit, at which time she said she couldn't discuss it any further for security. I told her this was ridiculous, as I couldn't give her this information as I DIDN'T HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM. But she said she couldn't discuss things further!!! Is this a con?
What do I do? Wait for another letter which no doubt will have extra late fees added to it?
Am I panicking unduly?

Due you have / previously had an MBNA card?
Some MBNA cards are being rebranded to Bank of America since the latter company took over.No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

Runs in my mind I may have had one ages ago (probably one of Martin's recommendations for free flights!) but I definitely don't have anything outstanding on my cards - I pay them off in full to avoid any charges. Do you think I should write to them or simply ignore it?0 -
If you ignore it you run the risk of totally screwing up your credit file.
Write to them; and obtain a copy of your credit file to see if the account is marked in arrears / defaulted.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

This is the current trick of BoA, MBNA etc. They appear to have a post room that loses cheques and have a bank system that misplaces money transfers from other financial institutions - all until beyond payment dates to generate late fees and unexpected interest charges. A disgraceful organisation.0

However secondly I have just discovered that because I didn't pay the £21.75 - they now have the audacity to say it's now up to £46 due to charges!!! I said I hadn't received any notification of owing them any money up to now but he says I should have received statements by email which I categorically have not. This is scandalous! How can I disprove they haven't sent me emails?? It's my word against theirs??0 -

They have a computer system that will be able to confirm when the emails were sent and they will also be able to see if you have opened the said emails. If they have not been opened it is very likely that they will refund the fees.

Hope this helps you.0 -

it's not guaranteed that they can see if somebody has opened the emails
there are 2 ways that they can see if you have opened the emails. the first of these are read reciepts. as far as i know, no mail client send read reciepts automatically unless set to, in which case you would have to click yes
the second is image/link tracking. basically, if you include an image or a link in the email that you view/click on, they can track which specific email. most email clients nowadays have images and links disabled by default because of spam (unless configured otherwise by the user)
so chances are, they don't know whether you have opened the email or notLeft to Pay/Originally Owed
