It says I need to be an administrator for the scannow thing and in elevated mode for the chkdsk thing
I'm the only person who owns, uses this thing0 -
ooo this is so scary --- how much can I bugga it up?
Nothing worse than wipe the hard drive / need to reformat and reload windows, ALL data on the drive -music/photo's/documents/emails gets lost but as you've followed the advice above and backup as the FIRST thing you did you'll have everything to copy straight back

I LOVE you.
I LOVE you all.
I think.
I did it with the wotsit thingy but couldn't do the scannow one ... don't know why I did the administrator wotsit.
Amyway, I've logged off and this time at the restart it counted all the way down and ran the check - presumably it fixed it too (hopefully) because LOOK ... I'm here ... yay.
If I can do anything for you guys ... make tea, knit you some socks ... have your babies ... let me know.
So appreciative. ta very much.0 -

It only worked the once.
I have run the scannow thing and it all came back clear - nothing was fixed though.
The CHKDSKx:F/R thing comes up with - not recognised as an external or internal command, operable program or batch file.
tried again without the caps and it says the filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect.
I'm considering system restore to a couple of months ago or something --- what do you all think?
Thanks for your time on this by the way - so appreciate it0 -

You said its 'about' 12m old. So if it's a day less , get it back in for a warranty repair PDQ. You've got your back up, so let HP sort the problem. No free lunch, and no free laptop

You need the spaces eg CHKDSK x: /F /R and also to replace the x: with your drive letter, probably c:The CHKDSKx:F/R thing comes up with - not recognised as an external or internal command, operable program or batch file.
But as Macman says, warranty could be the best option, as this shouldn't be repeatedly happening on a good disk.0 -
17 days over 12 months .... shall I give it a go do you think? Get a bit stroppy maybe?
Technically out of warranty, but you have nothing to lose by trying. Where did you buy it (please don't say PCW/DSG...)?
I think decidedly non stroppy would be a much better approach. No free lunch, and no free laptop
