What to do about my wee problem.
If I shutdown I can't get going again
A message:
Checking file system on c (something)
The type of file system is NTFS
One of your disks need to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
It then offers you the opportunity to interrupt by 'pressing any key' but this fails to interrupt. It stops the countdown but freezes. If I don't try and interrupt it counts down and freezes on '1' sec to go.
I did press escape and ran the start up check and it said all okay.
I pressed F8 - as I read advice to 'repair your computer' with the first option 'Tools & repair' or something like that. Anyway I needed to put in my password ... and I've forgotten it - oops. I haven't been locking my lappy for ages, I thought I could allow myself to forget it.
I am back in now (obviously) so can I do a check of something now? I'm too nervous to log off again as I think I just got lucky getting back in this time - nothing changed.
Can I find my password out somehow?
And if I do shutdown and get caught again - what should I do?
Thanks all - I think you're all brill on here.

Seems like the harddrive has some bad sectors, Probably due to abnormal shutdown i.e pulling plug out, turn off at sock while still turned on. Or could just be your op needs reinstalled.
go to start, run and cmd, and type chkdsk and let it run through.0 -
The check disk that is running on startup is usually caused by an unclean shutdown, or filesystem corruption. This could indicate a hard drive problem, or it could be just that the chkdsk flag is not clearing properly.
The first thing I would do is to make sure that your backup is up to date for all your important data - documents, photos, email etc.0 -
you've forgotten your password?
What OS is it, and I would suggest running in command prompt (start, all programs, accessories)
sfc /scannow
Once thats finished run
chkdsk /r/f
Probably just a corrupted filesystem like the others say due to interrupted shutdown, but may also be failing hard drive. What Make of laptop.0 -

It's a HP Pavilion DV6. It's about 12 months old (aren't they always) and it had windows 7 already installed. I haven't installed anything lately.
I've been to start, all progs, accessories and then got lost .. sorry - I can't see sfs/scannow ... might it look different.
Thanks to all replies, I just want to do everything right and in the right order --- not very techy
EDIT - found command prompt now - sorry --- so I should type in sfs/scannow in that blackbox that comes up? That looks scary0 -
Thinking about it now, it may have been my own fault ---- i think I did unplug and move rooms th other day, but I thought it would be okay.
Should I have logged off first - I thought that was the whole point of it having a battery is that it didn't have to be plugged in?0 -
Just be CERTAIN you have backed up everything you might need from the drive BEFORE typing any of the commands suggested, you have problems on your hard drive and not doing so is asking to lose your data.
Ultimately you'll end up either repairing the hard drive by 'fixing' your bad sectors and all will be fine, or worst case you'll need a new hard drive (likely available for free if still within manufacturers warranty -on the HARD drive, not the rest of the PC, warranty from HP or wherever you bought it).0 -
Well HP come with a built in Hard Drive check (you can access this by pressing F10 when the HP logo is displayed at startup then using the arrow keys to move along to diagnostics.
And to run sfc /scannow on windows 7.
Click the start icon, and type in "cmd" (No quotations) and the system will search for the command prompt, and should bring back the result at the top of the start popup box (icon should be a black box with _) named cmd or command prompt. Right hand click on this icon and select "Run As Administrator"
In the Command Prompt box that appears type "sfc /scannow" and press Enter.
Once that finnished type "chkdsk /r/f" press Y if asked to run on start and reboot the system.
Chances are systems fine and just intrupted the shutdown, and no you don't have to log off before restarting0 -
And - sorry I know I'm being a bit dim - should I type cmd in the 'run' box ... a black box comes up so then I put chkdsk in the black thingy?
ooo this is so scary --- how much can I bugga it up?
I spose it's buggad anyway huh?
EDIT - got it sorry double posting malarkey
I'm going to give it a go - thanks
I'll come back later0 -
