When is it best to book a flight to NYC for April 2011?

Hi All,

I'm off to New York in April, just after Easter, and coming back around the 5th May. I've been frantically searching flights and found a great deal of £365 pp from Manchester to NYC for my preferred dates (26/4 - 5/5), but today they've all gone up by at least £100 pp. Are they just going to simply start rising from now on and the longer I leave it the more expensive it's going to be.....or will there be certain times within the next couple of months when the prices may well drop again?

Many thanks for your help. Gary

Best time to book would have been during one of the airline sales last year. I can only see prices increasing as you are looking at a very popular destination and a popular time of year to travel. There were a few sales going on (with other airlines price matching), but they ended yesterday.

Trick is always to book when you see a deal you are happy with!

  • Thanks for your reply. I'm kicking myself for not booking it yesterday - hindsight is a wonderful thing! So you're saying that if i don't book today, it's only going to get more expensive? Any point in ringing the airline I was going to book with and seeing if they have a sympathetic ear? Cheers

Is it cheaper flying from heathrow for you?

  • Well, my friend lives in Chester with no transport so Manchester would be preferred, where as I live in Devon with transport so I'm not fussed, I could go and get her and then go back to London - then sleep for the entire flight! Cheers

Just did a quick search for MAN and got returns for ~£450 direct with major airlines (BA, DL, KLM). There wasn't really a much cheaper option going from LHR.
They had cached prices of as low as £321, reflecting the prices you saw yesterday.

  • Thanks, I'm obviously going to have to come to terms with paying at least £450 each now - many thanks for your help!

Might be worth deleting the cookies in your browser and searching again. Certain train ticket companies inflate their prices once they've hooked you on a cheap deal.

I've had this happen to me recently too. I was going to book a flight before Christmas and they have now leaped by £100.

I'm holding my nerve and assuming they will come down again. In fairness, since watching they have gone up another £50 and then back down again.
  • hi,
I have also been watching some flights (to the US & Australia) for a few weeks now and they seem to be up and down all the time sometimes by £100 each time.
I was thinking maybe beacuse of the Royal Wedding and Easter coming up around April the airlines were charging accordingly to grab the tourist Euro/Yen & Dollar.
I think if you find one you are happy with go ahead and book it now rather than later( £300-to £450 pp) seems about average.
Some of the offers that are cheaper have huge transfer wait times if they are not direct eg: I saw a great deal to new york recently for £286 but it took 30 hours to get there due to it having a transfer in Europe.
