They don't all use the same masts though.

I never said they did. I said most do share masts.

It still has no relevance to what I was saying about blackspots and bad signal areas. Some areas just can't get a signal.

But anyway here is some info on masts:

Check this out for the actual figures on shared masts:

Check this out for local masts:

You said the OP would get a similar service with other operators, which isn't true.

You said the OP would get a similar service with other operators, which isn't true.

Please do explain why it isn't it true?

He lives in a bad signal area! At least that is the impression I get.

    OMG!

If he's with an operator that has a mast that's quite a distance away, and he moves to an operator that has a mast closer to him, he's gonna get a much better service. So no, the service isn't similar across the different operators. It all depends on mast placement, how many operators provide service at his closest mast, and which services they provide from said mast.

I work in Telecoms, I'm not making this up.

Only partly true, distance is not the only factor in this.

    Please read the following:
"Areas where cell phones cannot transmit to a nearby cell site, base station, or repeater are known as dead zones. Dead zones are usually areas where cell phone service is not available because the signal between the handset and the cell site antenna is blocked, usually by hilly terrain, excessive foliage, physical distance, or tall buildings.
A number of factors can create dead zones which may exist even in locations in which a wireless carrier offers coverage, due to limitations in cellular network architecture (the locations of antennas), limited network density, interference with other cell sites, and topography. Since cell phones rely on radio waves, and radio waves travel though the air and are easily attenuated, cell phones may be unreliable at times. Like other radio transmissions, cell phone calls can be interrupted by large buildings, terrain, trees, or other objects between the phone and the nearest base station antennas."

So no, the service isn't similar across the different operators.

In what I was saying YES IT IS.

If a person lives in a blackspot, they will have poor service from any operator!

I am only going on what the OP has actually said, I don't know what you are basing your opinion on?!

It all depends on mast placement, how many operators provide service at his closest mast, and which services they provide from said mast.

You are really failing to spot the obvious here, I am talking about the OP living in a poor signal area, a blackspot.

Signals just cannot physically get to these areas.
I work in Telecoms, I'm not making this up.

Wow wee, working in Telecoms, what is that working in a call centre for T Mobile.

I am not making the facts up either, personally I thought it would just be general knowledge for most people, but obviously not.

lol, you were doing well until you started making assumptions. Believe what you like!

You're clearly an idiot, and trying to make you understand is obviously going to be a mammoth task. So, have a nice day.

Your presumptions are based on what exactly?

Do you suddenly have more information than I do, going by what the OP said?

Do you know where the OP lives?

Do you know the masts local to the OP?

Do you know the operators that use the masts local to the OP?

Do you know the physical layout of the landscape where the OP lives?

Answer to above, NO. Yet everything you have written is based on knowing the above.

You did fail to take note that the OP said they live in a poor 3G signal area, which is a fair basis to presume that they live in a poor signal area. Which I what I based my presumptions on.

Also as you pointed out that you work in telecoms, I thought you would have picked up on this.

Liam - I live in a Blackspot for Orange and T-Mobile. I get 100% reception from O2 and Vodafone.

Therefore when you wrote that the OP would get a similar service with other operators, maybe except 1, this isn't true. No big deal.

Your situation is not the same as how interpret the OPs. I presume they live in an area with bad signal in general.

    Again why isn't it true?

Ok lets try and clear this up a bit, and stop people misquoting what I have and haven't said.

I have never said that different operators do not have varying coverage or anything to suggest otherwise.

I have never said that in a certain area you can't get signal from different operators.

    I actually wrote,

"Presumably if you have bad signal with O2, you will no doubt have bad signal with any other mobile phone company. They are all quite similar to be fair. Although I do know from experience that in some areas you can only get signal with one certain provider, and not the others."

I have even highlighted the important words to make it a bit easier for you all to understand.

I am not sure if you don't understand what a true blackspot is or have not read or maybe not understood what I am getting at.

If you live in a blackspot you won't get signal from any operator. I did not invent radio waves, but I do understand how they work!!!

Same principle being that if you live in a bad signal area, you will most likely get bad signal from whatever network.

It is not a network issue, more an issue that radio waves cannot travel to certain areas, or cannot travel through physical obstructions etc.

I have presumed that the OP lives in a bad signal area, whereas you and Gordon Hose have presumed it is a problem with O2 and the positioning of their masts, the network used by the OP.

I have used the OP saying they live in a blackspot for 3G, not network specific, as the basis of my opinion.

I cannot see any basis to yours or Gordon Hose opinion, other than you disagree with what I am saying.
