Etihad: 23kg allowance, can I get away with 25kg without charge?

Anyone has any experience with etihad luggage allowance exceeding by a few kg? How strict are they making you pay or are they ok with just a few kg over 23kg. I will be myself at the airport this saturday so I will have to dispose the 2kg as I will not be paying like 40 euro per kg.

  • What about your carry on luggage allowance? You're usually allowed at least 7kg. Can you put the extra weight in there?

7kg hand luggage I will already max that and probably even go a bit over, also a laptop too - this is allowed as seperate item i think?

I'm thinking if I should put like 10kg in the hand luggage, but will have to dispose items if they are strict.

Laptop will have to go in your hand luggage.

unfortunately, your question is one that cannot be answered until the time of check in, as ultimately it will be upto them at the end of the day. They may just waive you through, they may throw the book at you.

only way to avoid 100% of being charged is to stick within the limits.

Can you not post anything out to your final destination?

  • I suspect if you are friendly and warm it will be OK. Largely depends on who you get and the mood you are in. I've marginally exceeded on Etihad and many other airlines with no issue (not talking about Air Asia though - don't go there!).

However, they are very unlikely to weigh your carry-on, never happened to me. Can you possibly have something very heavy at the top of your check-in, so if it is an issue you can quickly take it out and put it in hand luggage?
  • You will get away with 23.99Kg as they can only charge for full KG!

And I suspect you would be foolish to take this advice. The airline is in it to make money, and if they can nab you for a few extra KG's they will. We fly with many different airlines and ALWAYS see people either complaining that they are being ripped off because they are only a bit over, or trying to take things out of bags at the weighing counter. My advice would be "don't exceed the limit, then you won't be worrying about what is going to happen at check in.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Well, yes of course, technically you should follow the instructions to the letter of the law. But having flown over the allowance on Etihad (for 4 flights, but only weighed at 2!) they barely blinked at the excess. So i'm probably 'qualified' to offer an opinion.

Had 25.5 kilos coming back from Hong Kong in Singapore Airlines last month, they didn't care. I've exceeded many times, and it's only Air Asia that have done me.

But yes, they can and might charge you excess luggage. Check out their charges and be prepared?

Thanks for taken the time to reply. I thought laptop is allowed as seperate item which doesn't count towards the 7kg hand luggage allowance? Am I wrong? (Carry on free item as I suspect - terms below)

From my experience with singapore/thai airways & cathay pacific they are fine with a few kg over on check in luggage and also do not usually weight hand luggage.

What else can I take on the flight for free?
The following are classified as carry-on items, and can be taken on the flight in addition to your carry-on luggage allocation.

    • Handbag, pocket book or purse
    • Overcoat, wrap or blanket
    • Umbrella or walking stick
    • Small camera and / or binoculars
    • A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight
    • Collapsible wheelchair / crutches
    • Braces or prosthetic devices (provided the guest is dependent on them)
    • Briefcase or portable PC which is not being used as a container for transportation of articles, regarded as baggage — exception: laptop - not to be activated without flight crew knowledge / concurrence
    • Mobile phone — exception: not to be utilized during flight.
