Get yourself down to Richer Sounds. See whats in there. Onkyo are a decent make and cheap.0

Ditto for RS.
I have a Sony STR-DG820 amp(as it has HDMI through for video and sound) and a Tannoy 5:1 surround sound system for my PS3. Both from RS
As Hammyman says Onkyo are very good as well.0 -
Ive the feeling the OP means way cheaper than them:idea:0

You'll need an AV reciever/amp and a set of speakers. At Richer Sounds the cheapest options would be this this Sony STRDH500 reciever for £99, and this Pioneer SHS100 5.1 speaker set for £79. To be honest, you'd be better off going for a an all in one home cinema package with optical inputs.im in need of home cinema sytem to run from my lounge tv.

For the love of god, please don't. If the player part packs in, you're left with the quandry of spending more money to replace the lot instead of £20-£30 for another DVD player. And you may find that the "all in one" doesn't support Dolby TrueHD which means if you're watching a blu-ray through another player, you'll only get 2.1 sound and not full surround.0 -

LOL, you might want to look up Dolby TrueHD and educate yourself on what it means. You don't need a lossless codec to get full surround sound. The PS3 can bitstream Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus full surround over optical TOSLINK cables. Yes, the lossless TrueHD has higher audio quality (and would need to be converted to stereo to fit the bandwidth limitations of optical cables if a HDMI connection is not used) but unless he has expensive high end speakers he won't be able to tell the difference. And you may find that the "all in one" doesn't support Dolby TrueHD which means if you're watching a blu-ray through another player, you'll only get 2.1 sound and not full surround.poppy100 -

Does anyone actually listen to FM radio through an AV amp anymore? And you can always tune the Sky box into it...LOL, you might want to look up Dolby TrueHD and educate yourself on what it means. *YAWN*
I already know plenty thankyou very much.
The reason I had to replace my perfectly working 10 year old Pioneer AV amp/decoder was because Blu-Ray discs no longer were playable in 5.1 surround sound, even setting the formats on the PS3. For example Avatar etc only played in 2.1 on Bluray on the old amp.
I know the reason why but perhaps you'd care to explain.0 -
Hi Hammyman I'd like to know the reason because I have a 10 year old AV receiver - an Arcam AVR100, and I get perfect DD 5.1 and DTS from my Blu-ray player. I don't have a PS3, I use a Sony BDP 370 Blu-ray player. Obviously I cant get DTS HD or Dolby TrueHD but certainly do not have any issues getting full 5.1 surround sound via a toslink connection. I do agree with you about not getting an all in one box. DVD optical drives I've had in the past have ended up flakey, to say the least, having had at least three DVD players packing up. Separates is definately the way to go!"...IT'S FRUITY!"0
