Htc wildfire questions please

Well after reading these forums I am still completely confused. I have an old SE phone and I have never had a wifi phone or touchscreen. I don't use up my minutes always, but that is because I feel inhibited by my contract. (With vodaphone on an old stop the clock contract on 20.00 pounds a month 125 minutes). I could get the Wildfire on a new contract but they want me to sign 24 months to include 300 minutes as well as a decent amount of texts and data. 24 months for me, would be crazy as I feel 12 months is long enough and we are in a recession. I went into Phones 4u and saw the white Wildfire which looks very similar to an I phone to me and I like it. However, they could only offer me a decent contract on 24 months. They have no PAYG wildfires even though they are advertising them at £129. They seemed pushy also. They said the blackberry contract are minimum £25 I think.

I am also confused because reading the forums, some people say the Wildfire is no good? I want to use the web, I would prefer a querty keyboard but I think I can manage with a virtual keyboard and I do like the idea of aps. Any comments or ideas? Should i wait for a more ideal phone? Also I looked at the Samsung Galaxy 551 in the Vodaphone shop.

  • I had the wildfire its a good phone very easy to use lovely big screen easy to set up emails and stuff. Phones 4u are really pushy they do tend to pounce on you when you enter the shop. I think Tescos have a deal on with the Wildfire at the moment not sure if its 12 or 24 months though but I think its on for £20 they use the o2 network if thats any good for you

If you want the phone on pay-as-you-go from Phones4u and they are offering it for £129 then go for it.

If they refuse you and try to get you hooked up to a contract then just stand your ground, keep repeating that you want it on PAYG and let them do their thing, eventually ask one last time before announcing you are about to leave and if they cannot help you you will look elsewhere (mention Tescos, they are unconnected with Tescos it may worry them they are losing business to another massive retailer). The last 2 minutes of you trying to walk out of the store empty handed are usually when they cave and give you what you want if it is at all possible.

I like the Wildfire but it does have a low resolution screen so I recommend you see one working first so you can judge for yourself how the screen looks when browsing the web etc.

Tesco also do the white one on PAYG for £160 but I've not seen it anywhere else as low as £129. If your local phones4u don't have it in stock have you tried asking if they have it in any other stores or when they expect to get it in? It could be a promotion to get you through the doors to then try and flog you an expensive contract, I wouldn't put anything past phones4u.

You can get the wildfire on contract with buymobilephones.net on t-mobile 300/300/1GB 24months for £15/month with 13 months half price redemption which averages out at around £11/month. You may not want to bother with cashback redemption, but that's just to give you an idea of what kind of competitive deals are out there.

Personally if I were going to go for a 2 year contract I'd be looking to spend a little more and get a Desire.

If a proper keyboard is important to you then have a look at the Nokia models like the C3 or the E5. These aren't as fancy as the android phones, but they should both be cheaper than the Wildfire. I had an E63 and still rate it as one of the best phones I've owned. It's a couple of years old now so you might want something more up to date, but I think 3 still sell them on PAYG.

A San Fransisco is a better phone and can be had for about £70-£90, coupled with a rolling monthly sim-only contract makes more sense in the situation you describe.
