New to motoring...tax disc question
Comments

I have all those things - everything is now good. Confusion re DVLA calling all these things by names no-one else uses. It took me a long time to get used to calling the V10 slip a "log book", as they do. I also thought you could apply for the tax disc via the PO not actually get it there. Thanks for help, all!0

Strange the dealers do not usually release the car without valid VED or proof of insurance.
Indeed, I thought it was a legal requirement. Certainly on occasions when I've bought a new car, proof of insurance (even the dealers 14 day cover note) is required before I can drive away.
PS. I agree the terms such as VED when everyone else calls it tax can be confusing!0 -
It is only a legal requirement if they are using the automated first registration system for a new car to get the tax disc. Once you have paid for the vehicle the dealer has absolutely no say in being able to stop you driving it off the forecourt.
The most that they can do is report you to the police as possibly uninsured/untaxed.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
OP - all you need are:
- V5C/2 New Keeper's supplement - the green slip from logbook, which needs to be in your name
- insurance certificate
- MOT certificate
- money
Take to Post office to tax. Vehicle should be kept off road until displaying tax disc.
