New to motoring...tax disc question

I bought a car 10 days ago from a dealer, noticed on the way home it had no tax disc - my fault for not asking / noticing that. I sent off the V5C document to become the registered keeper, and need for that to be returned in my name before I can buy a tax disc, to avoid it being sent to the previous address. A week on, no returned car document! Can't get through to an adviser via DVLA...

My question is: do I simply have to wait it out for two weeks of paperwork before being able to drive the car? At the moment its just in the garage. What would the standard way of dealing with buying a car with no tax have been (for next time)?

Get the dealer to tax it.

ISTR that there used to be a bit of the V5 that you keep that can be used to tax the car at a post office. Is this still the case?

    ETA
You should have kept section 10 which can be used to tax the car.

Make sure you declare it SORN from the day of purchase........and get an acknowledgement letter.

You should have asked the dealer for your section on the V5, more to the point the dealer should have given it to you, he should know better. Maybe he did give it to you and you haven't noticed. It's a little green tear off section, which allows you to tax it.

I have section 10 but DVLA say its "not enough" to get a tax disk. This was on their recorded message this afternoon! On the section itself, it says its for getting a vehicle excise lisence.

Too late for dealer to pay for the tax... happy to pay, just can't do!

(edit) and worse, reading the back of the v10 it says, if you haven't received your car registration document in 6 weeks, give us a ring! Guess I'll try to get through again to DVLA tomorrow ...:O(

Strange the dealers do not usually release the car without valid VED or proof of insurance.

Tax with a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement – in person or by post
You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.
    You will need to take:
    • Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
    • insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
    • valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
    • the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

It is now called the V5C/2 New keepers details section and CAN be used to tax the vehicle. DVLA's own guidance

The bit the dealer should have sent off, the little tear off slip (new keeper supplement) is what you need to tax it.

The tax disc is the same thing as the vehicle excise license

Maybe they mean "by itself, it is not enough to get you a tax disc", which is true, because you ALSO need a current insurance certificate and an MOT certificate.... have you got these? If you have Insurance & MOT & section 10 (V5C/2W - the green bit), go to the Post Office with these 3 things and you will get a tax disc.
